A/N: Ok..so I'm pretty sure we all know that the Hamilton musical isn't always the most accurate thing. And unfortunately, the fandom isn't as accurate either. I'm pretty sure most people reading this know exactly what I'm about to tell you, but imma still write this to make sure we're all on the same page here. Although, it turned into things that annoy me about the musical lams fandom lol.
1. John being so feminine that he looks like he's a girl.
Why. Why did this happen. How did this happen. Why did anyone let this happen. Why does John look like a walking stereotype. This is not what the lord wanted. John was actually a pretty masculine gay in both the musical and real life. The fact that the (musical)fandom did this on their own accord really salts my apples. Now, I know that not everyone in the fandom does this. But I feel like it shouldn't be happening either way. Instead of portraying John in a more masculine light(as he actually was), some people feel the need to distort him into an overly feminine stereotype. I've seen drawings of John in crop tops, heels, exaggerated eyelashes, ect. I see this happen mostly musical lams fanart than anywhere else and I think that it's supposed to oppose the yaoi trope of the "man" and "woman" or "top" and "bottom" of a gay relationship. It doesn't even make sense that John would be the one playing the more girl-ish role either. If anything, Alexander should have been the one to play it. Even in his time, he was known to be more feminine than men usually were. In other words, he was a twink.2." Gay is a personality trait"
Yes, I know that gay men tend to be more feminine than a straight one(i.e. Hamilton). But you can't just replace actual character development/traits. In some fanfiction, I have seen people gine Hamilton a lot of traits and stuff but for John, it's just gay. This one kinda ties in with #1.
3. Unneeded past traumas
Ok so I'm pretty sure everyone's familiar with this. Especially in fanfiction. Basically, some people make either Hamilton or Laurens(sometimes both) new past traumatic experiences even though they already have enough on their plate. Here is a list of the added tramas i spoke of:
-Hamilton having abusive (foster) parents
-Laurens have an abusive father
-hamilton being raped(SERIOUSLY WHYYYYY???)
-Hamilton having depression(as far as I know, he does not. Although I could be wrong
EDIT:
4. Modern AU'sNow, before I go on, Let me just clarify that I don't hate modern AU's themselves. What I do have a problem with is that I think they are overdone. I've been in the fandom for about a year now, and I think I've only read few musical fics that were set in the colonial times. the rest were modern AU's. When I first got into the fandom, I didn't know what to type in the search bar other than just 'lams'. There were so many Modern fics...even when I was trying to find a 1700's one. If you like Modern lams, that's fine...But try not to overdo it. When I see search results like this, I think of it as pure laziness since you don't have to do any historical research. And yeah. I get it. research can be really boring(I should know, considering I write historical lams) but I makes me feel a lot better. Because I feel a sense of completeness, knowing about how much work I did and having all my efforts be worth it. Maybe it's just me but I like doing the research and making it accurate because I feel like I've learned something.
A/N: this one took a while b/c I felt really negative and that made me feel sad..also I kept forgetting about it lol. Sorry for the grammatical errors I want to get this one out quickly. If you want me to elaborate, I can. just leave it in the comments :)
