The gate was rusted enough to break off the lock and walk right in. The sun had set as we made our way further into the camp. Nostalgia was hitting me at every corner."This is the camp where we were trained." Steve said.
Natasha held her phone out, using it as a tracker to find the source of the file. "Change much?"
"A little." Steve stared up at a flag pole.
I looked at a building, the old mess hall. The memory of meeting Wes for the first time flashed through my mind, along with the memory of meeting Steve. A small smile spread on my lips.
"This is a dead end. Zero heat signatures, zero waves, not even radio." Natasha spoke. "Whoever wrote the file must have used a router to throw people off."
Steve turned and stared straight ahead at an ammunition building behind Nat. I looked too, realizing why he found it so interesting.
"What is it?" Natasha asked.
"Either we never saw that building, or it's new." I replied.
Steve began walking towards it and we followed. "It is new. Army regulations forbid storing ammunition within five hundred yards from the barracks. This building is in the wrong place."
We came to the door and Steve used his shield to break the lock. I opened the door which led down to a flight of stairs. Steve took the lead and we followed him down into the dark room. Steve reached over to a panel and turned a knob, this turned on the lights, revealing the SHIELD emblem on the far wall.
"I've been here before," I remarked. "It's the first SHIELD headquarters."
Steve and Natasha looked around at the empty desks and chairs. We walked into another room with bookshelves and on the far wall was three portraits. Colonel Chester Phillips, Howard Stark and Peggy Carter.
"There's Stark's father." Natasha pointed.
"Howard." Steve nodded.
Natasha then looked at the picture of Peggy. "Who's the girl?"
Steve gazed at the portrait, not answering the question. He walked away and we continued looking around before Steve called out.
"Come here, both of you."
We walked over and he pointed to a gap between two shelves, wind seemed to be coming through as there was a quiet hum and the cobwebs moved slightly.
"If you're already working in a secret office..." Steve began as he pulled one shelf back, revealing a light and an elevator door. "Why do you need to hide the elevator." Steve looked back at me. "Did you know about this?"
I shook my head. "No, honest. I'm just as confused as you are."
We went forward and Natasha held her phone out to the dial panel next to the elevator. It scanned the numbers and gave us the four digit code. 8539. Natasha pressed those numbers and a green light came on. The doors opened, revealing a rather modern looking elevator. We stepped inside, the doors closed and the elevator began moving down.
A sick feeling came to my stomach and white vapor came out of my mouth.
"You okay?" Steve asked.
"This doesn't feel right." I shook my head. "Something about this is almost familiar to me."
The elevator stopped, the doors opened and we looked out into the dark, empty room ahead of us. My heart pounded, vapor escaped my mouth again and I grabbed Steve's arm.
