I was going to update yesterday, but some stuff got in my way. This is the last chapter, plus the epilogue (that's going to be uploaded tomorrow, hopefully)!
~Rainbow Steve's POV~
"Promise me... if it doesn't work, will you remember me?" Sabre asks, and right before I can respond the portal closes. Tears are now streaming down my face, and I run over to hug Galaxy Steve. I bury my face against his chest, and he comfortingly pats my back. I cry against his chest, thinking I was finally over crying but apparently not at all.
My sobs keep getting louder and louder, my salty tears rolling down my cheeks and getting onto his shirt.
We stay like that for a while, me crying against him and him comforting me, probably around a half hour. After around that amount of time, I get to where I am well enough to actually be done crying, for now at least. I look at Galaxy Steve, and then he nods. Together, we walk outside of the house and then start to build the machine.
We clear a big area from all the grass, and then dig in the ground to make a big platform of iron blocks. Then, me and Galaxy Steve start to make the redstone wiring, where we put a layer of redstone along the edge of the iron platform and then some repeaters. We continue to do some other stuff, not completely understanding what we're doing, but soon we finish to make it the best we think it could be.
Galaxy Steve does the finishing touch: he places the lever. We make sure all the redstone is connected and that everything is going to work properly, and then on the count of three we turn it on. "Three... Two... One!" I shout and then run back, lightning spawning on the iron platform we made. For a moment or two the lightning continues to pound down on our machine, and then it stops.
Me and Galaxy Steve look in, and there is nothing there.
My hope slowly starts to fade away, and Galaxy Steve smiles weakly at me. "We can try again, we just got to keep hope!" Galaxy Steve says and then I slowly nod. "It's going to work, right?" I ask quietly, and Galaxy Steve smiles weakly.
"We're going to keep trying, even if it doesn't work. No man left behind, right?" he says, smiling; making me force on a smile. "Right..." I say and we continue to tweak the machine.
~Galaxy Steve's POV~
I groan, getting annoyed with this machine for not bringing Sabre and Void Steve back already. "That was our 20th try! Is it ever going to work?!" Rainbow Steve says, tears starting to form in his eyes.
That's when I get an idea.
"Do you have anything connected to Void Steve?" I ask Rainbow Steve, and he nods. "He gave me this bracelet after me and him agreed to work together," he says, holding it in his hands.
I grab it, and then untie Sabre's bandana that I've had on my wrist. Then, I make two pedestals with a chest on top of each of them. Rainbow Steve makes a redstone trail connecting the two chests to the machine, and then I do the last thing.
I place the bandana in one chest and the bracelet in the other.
"This is the last idea I got..." I say softly and Rainbow Steve nods. We go over to where the lever on the machine is, and then on the count of three, Rainbow Steve flicks the lever. Tons of lightning spawns on the machine, lasting longer than any other time, and then it slowly comes to a stop.
We go to look inside the machine, and Sabre and Void Steve both stand in it weakly.
~Sabre's POV~
Void Steve sighs, and I do as well. Hurricane and Midnight look at us, seeming to apologize. Elemental Steve sighs as well, and then I sit down on the empty nothingness that's under me. I bury my head in my hands, and Void Steve wraps his arms around me and hugs me loosely. "We're going to get out of here," Void Steve promises me, placing his hand under my chin to make me look at him.
I smile weakly at him, making him frown. Then, he gently presses his lips against mine. After a moment or so he pulls away. "I promise..." he whispers and then stands up, holding his hand out for me to grab.
A bunch of lightning starts to spawn in here, and tons of wind as well. A green portal spawns, swirls going around all inside it. "What is that?" I yell over the loud wind, and Elemental Steve smiles.
"I think it's how you and Void Steve are going to escape," he says calmly, and I feel myself start to beam. "Let's go then!" I shout, and Void Steve smiles. I hold my hand out for Elemental Steve to grab onto, but he shakes his head.
"I'm staying," he yells loud enough to be heard over the roar of the wind. I feel a state of panic flood through me, but before I can do anything Void Steve pulls me through the portal. Elemental Steve smiles, waving goodbye to us. Midnight and Hurricane smile at us, shouting goodbye over the loud wind.
***
I slowly get up, just to find my hand is gripping Void Steve's tight. When I look down to see my own hand, I see it's not faded anymore and is actually full of cover. I look up at Void Steve, seeing that he's full of color as well.
"Sabre? Void Steve? It worked Rainbow Steve!" Galaxy Steve shouts, and then runs over to hug us. Rainbow Steve comes over as well, and I smile softly from seeing him. "Sabre! Void Steve! You're okay!" Rainbow Steve giggles, running over and tackling all of us in a hug. We all laugh, smiling brightly.
"I told you they would get us out," Void Steve says, smiling. I nod, happy that he's right. For a little while we all just hang out, me and Void Steve telling Rainbow Steve and Galaxy Steve about what he experienced in the void area.
"Void Steve," Rainbow Steve says softly, starting what he's going to say. "You should tell Galaxy Steve," Rainbow Steve says, and Galaxy Steve looks at Void Steve.
I immediately know what Rainbow Steve is talking about, and then nod. "He deserves to know..."
