Chapter Fifteen
*
Yasmine slung the strap of her duffel bag over her right shoulder, and sighed deeply. She had no idea where she could go. Slouching down in her bus seat, she started thinking; did she really have to run away from home?
She clapped a hand to her face and groaned. What had she done? She should’ve let her father at least explain before she jumped to any conclusions.
No! I did the right thing! How could he cheat on mom? Especially when he knew that mom was sick! She thought. But where do I go?
Could she go to Hailey’s? No, the dorm leader wouldn’t let her in this late. And, she’d have to pay for the dorm room. So, Hailey’s dorm was out of the question. Where else could she go? She wasn’t really that close with anyone else. What about Aaron?
No no no, she warned herself. I’m supposed to be forgetting him. He’s fricking getting married!
So he was out too.
There was only one person left.
She leaned her face against the bus window, and peered out at the beautiful city lights. Every other girl her age would be partying this late, but of course, she had to be stuck with complicated problems.
Yasmine took out her iPhone and unlocked it. She dialed James’ number and waited for him to answer.
Ring! Ring!
He picked up on the third ring. “Hello? Yasmine?”
“H-Hey,” she said, suddenly feeling nervous. What would he think of her? How would he re-act to her running away? Should she even tell him the truth?
“Hey Yasmine!” James chirped, completely oblivious. “What’s up, babe?”
“I kind of need a favor,” Yasmine managed to say.
“Sure thing, what is it? If it’s to break up, I’m not accepting that favor,” he joked, laughing.
“Haha, very funny,” she replied sarcastically. “No, its not to break up, but um, I-I need a place to stay. Can I come over yours?”
“Why, what’s wrong?” he asked, all playful tone gone.
“Nothing’s wrong.” Yasmine fiddled with the zipper of her duffel bag. “Um, my house is g-getting renovations!”
“Really?” he asked, surprised. “What are you getting renovated?”
“Er, my room,” she lied. “Wait, did I say I was getting my house renovated? I-I meant my dad and I agreed to let me go find my own place to stay.”Her lie was getting bigger and bigger.
“Wow, that’s great!”
“Uh, yeah. But, right now, I have no where to go, so can I sleep over your house for a couple of days or something?” she asked. “Until I get my own place, of course.”
“Oh yeah, it’s fine with me,” he answered. “Where are you?”
“I’m thinking of getting some take-out, then coming over your place,” Yasmine said truthfully. That really was her plan.
“Which takeout place?” he asked.
“Lucky Duck—“
Beep Beep! Beep Beep!
Before she could’ve said why, he had already hung up. Yasmine stared at her phone, confused, then tucked it away.
“Next stop, Main Street!” the bus driver roared from the speakers.
