[If you haven't read The Magicians yet, you might want to go back and check that out, for purposes of understanding what's going on.]
The Magician King picks up shortly after the end of The Magicians. You could think of it as the answer to a hypothetical question: what if the Pevensies went to Narnia and never came back? What if they never had to go home, and could stay being kings and queens forever? Maybe after a couple of years they'd get a little tired of running the country and living in non-stop luxury. Maybe they'd get restless, and start looking for adventures. Maybe they'd wish they hadn't.
That's one half of the story. The other half is about a minor character from The Magicians named Julia. Julia is like Quentin's shadow: she takes the exam for Brakebills, but she doesn't pass, she fails.
But now that she knows that magic is real, Julia will stop at nothing to become a magician, and if Brakebills won't teach her, she'll find another way. She sets out on a dark, twisted path through a seedy magical underworld, where she will find her education, but it will cost her more than she ever imagined.
