When We Were Young

Chapter 3

"Darn these damn needles," Kelly complained as she licked the blood off of her thumb that she had just stuck. Kelly swayed back and forth to Jon Langston's 'Forever Girl' playing in the back ground. Kelly loved this song and, halfheartedly wished that she may be Arthur's Forever Girl. Smiling at her school girl wishes, Kelly continued working on her masterpiece line for Acres Fashion. She had just finished her first piece which was a beautiful golden glitter mermaid dress that clung to every curve of the owner. Her line was based on glitter and bright pieces. Kelly thought about how she used to play dress up with her mother and, she used to dress her up in all the glitter clothes her mother had. She would mix and match pieces and, her mother always saying that she should be a fashion designer. 

Well, now she was going for her dream. Kelly pondered about how life would be if she made it in the fashion world. What type of lavish livings she would be able to partake in. Sighing, Kelly had only hoped that she could make a comfortable life to where she didn't have to want for anything. 

Running her hands across the material she obtained from Mr. Foster, she ran across a piece of leather, it reminded her of Arthur and she wondered where the catch was. Kelly's mind went to the curse of her family.

"Kelly, you know it's a family curse to live your life lonely," Momma said. Kelly sighed at her superstition. Nobody is supposed to be alone their entire life. Everyone is meant to be loved...right? Although Kelly didn't believe in the superstitions that her family had, she couldn't help but think that may be the reason that she never had good luck with her past boyfriends. They either lost interest in her or slept around on her. The pain that she felt after she found that Brian had betrayed her was indescribable. She had loved Brian with all her heart and, she didn't want to be hurt like that ever again. 

Kelly decided that she should be careful with her heart and time with Arthur Moore. She liked their little game of calling each other by their last name like olden days. There was just something about Arthur that she couldn't peg. Why would he be interested in me? He had never given me the time of day before the day he left for the Marines Corp. He hadn't known about her crush on him, he never even knew that she was alive, or so she thought. The way that he looks at Kelly made her insides burn with a feeling that she had never felt before. 

Shaking her head clear of her thoughts, Kelly continued with her work and let the day pass by. 

Ring Ring

"Hello Mother," Kelly picked up the phone. 

"Mother? What's up with you girl?" Patricia Linton, Kelly's mother, said into the phone detecting her daughter's sadness. 

"Nothing momma, I'm just trying to finish these pieces for my line," Kelly responded. 

"Kelly, I'm your momma and, I know when something is bothering you and it's not them clothes girl so spit it out," Patricia reprimanded. Sighing, Kelly ran down the whole situation to her mother. Expressing her interest in Arthur and hoping that things would blossom with him. 

"Well, sounds like a nice young man Kelly but, you know that our family has a curse and we can't be with men," Patricia said sadly. Kelly rolled her eyes and wished that her mother would just give up this superstition. 

"Momma, I am not about to listen to this crazy talk. I don't believe in that nonsense and neither should you," Kelly replied hotly. She had, had enough with this whole crazy talk. Just because her mother, aunt, and their mother hadn't had any luck with men doesn't mean that she wont have any luck. She was sure as anything ever, that Arthur liked her and she was going to see where it was going to go. 

"Look Kelly, I just don't want you hurt anymore. I love you and I'm only looking out for you as my daughter," Patricia replied. Sighing, Kelly resigned to just listen to her mother go on and on about the stupid curse and how this won't go anywhere with Arthur.
