Foil. We know it as the thin metal sheets that we use to cover hot food or that cover chocolate bars, etc.A sheet of foil has two sides. One is shiny and the other is dull, or however you choose to describe it.
They are opposites.
In Literature, the term 'foil' is used to describe two characters that are opposites.Just because the characters are opposites of each other does not mean they don't get along. In fact, the most common cliché in stories is that "opposites attract", this is not necessarily true, nor is it false. Characters that foil each other can be enemies, friends, family.
A great example is that of 'Mr Birling' and 'Inspector Goole' from 'An Inspector Calls'.
Mr Birling is a middle-class business man with a capitalistic viewpoint, he believes people should only take care of themselves.
Inspector Goole, on the other hand, is the Author(J.B. Priestley)'s mouth-piece. He promotes Socialism and believes all people should be responsible for their actions.
That's it for today, I look forward to another day of cramming my brain with information(that I will probably never ever use!) and learning new things! Yaaay.....
Have a good day/night all who read this nonsense and don't start revising for exams only two months before the day!
