CHAPTER IV

Lynnette

I stared at the smooth face of the woman that stared down at me. Her skin, a creamy caramel shade that made her green eyes pop out. Her orbs stared back with relief and certainty. Of what, I wasn't sure. In fact, at this moment, I wasn't sure of much.

I opened my mouth to speak, my attempt in vain as I croaked out. My throat felt immensely dry, how long had I been asleep?

Well, you can't really sleep while you're dead...

The woman passed me a white cup, with what I assumed to be water. With shaky hands and apprehension in my eyes, I took the drink and let the liquid revive the dried desert that had become my mouth.

"Thank you," I whispered, my voice rasp making me clear my throat. My actions made my throat hurt more, as I scrubbed my face in pain. I thought once dead you couldn't suffer? If this was the afterlife, I had been scammed!

"Take it easy, dear," she spoke, then turned towards the younger girl I had forgotten was in the makeshift room, "Layla, how 'bout you go fetch the healer. Let her know the Commander has awakened."

"Yes, Mamma!" with that, the pitter patter of the small child's feet were heard as she raced out the tent, gleefully laughing.

My heart ached as a thought floated through my mind, I would never live to have pups. Shit, my eyes widen, I died a virgin. This really is a scam! — my rambling thoughts were stopped short by the sound of my name.

"Commander Lynnette," it called to me, snapping my head towards the woman, "I'm Shila, your second in command,"

"What?" I asked, sitting more upright, "What's going on? Why do you keep calling me that?"

On that thought, why did I need a healer? The dead don't need healers...

"Commander?" she asked, referring to my inquiries, "That's your given title. Blessed upon by the Goddess herself,"

I stared at her as if she were crazy. She had to be. My gears began turning and a million explanations were being produced, one after the other. I got it! I must have fallen into the wrong dimension. I was dead. This was not my life. Ha! Who would ever make me a warrior, much less a commander, at this point? A lone wolf who wasn't able to protect her pack. Warrior blood who had failed her family.

"Commander," the woman, Shila, called out for this other dimension me, "what's the last thing you remember?"

"Dying." I said, staring straight into her eyes, hoping, that just maybe, she would realize she had the wrong person. That I wasn't her Lynnette. I wasn't my Lynnette either. I—I don't know who I am anymore.

"Well... yes," Shila said, clearing her throat as she moved from my side, "She will explain it better than I can. For now, don't worry. Just know your safe,"

Before I could question her on who 'she' was, two figures came into the tent.

The plump figure of another woman came into view after the younger girl, Layla. Her blonde hair hung at her waist, a basket of medical trinkets in her hands. "This is Healer Misha, she will have you back as new in little time,"

"Commander," the healer spoke, bowing and then approaching me, "I'll just be making sure your good to go. From our last assessment, you should be back to top state,"

I stared at both woman, back and forth.

"I shall be back to escort you to her highness," said Shila, turning towards the small child who stood towards the side, eying me with wonder, "Come on Layla, let's go,"

"Bye-Bye Commander!" her voice rang through the air, as she took her mother's waiting hand and together took their leave.

"How are you feeling?" Misha asked, taking out flasks and mixing things here and about.

"Confused," I voiced, my senses numb.

"That's to be expected, it's not a regular occurrence to travel through the line of the living and the dead."

"Huh?" I questioned, my eyes wide as I stared in shock, "What?"

"Open up," was all she said as she brought a spoonful of substance, numbly I followed, "that should be good. It'll calm you down and stop your mind from spinning.

"Now let's see, your temperature is good, and after this, your blood pressure should lower, and be just right along with all your vitals.

"Now let that take in, and you should be back on your feet in a short while,"

I stared into space as a surprisingly pleasant taste met my taste buds.

The line of life and death? Was this hell? Why was the devil playing a game with me?

I don't know how my mind had led to my next thought. Easton. Just the thought of his name brought a striking pain. A remnant of betrayal tasted bitter in my tongue.

How could he!

But his pack.

No! He lied!

You know he had to.

What else was a lie?
Just have faith.

Of what? I'm dead. I'm lost.

It's not over.

...

Yet.

✽❋✽

My love,

I'm sad to say that we must go to war. I will be gone before you wake, as my father has called upon me. The Zeita's son has killed his mate and must now face punishment. If you were to ask me, I think my father, like the rest, just lust after power. But I, my love, just wish to be right by your side. Please, pray to the Goddess for our forgiveness. Father says Alpha Easton must pay for his treason. But, isn't an attack against the Zeita, a sin? The highest of all treasons? Pray that I come back to you, for that is all I wish. Pray that the Goddess herself can stop the chaos that is brewing. Pray, my love, for I love you. As I will pray to the moon.

My heart is yours,

Your love.
