Sabrina had been spending many days working at the Garrison, whether she was covering shifts or working extra time. It was a pass time that she loved, despite all the nagging that Betty had given her. It also meant she saw the Shelby boys a lot, as well as Polly and Ada, the occasional time.
She hadn't seen Ada much though, there was obviously something going on. Tommy had been more tense than normal, and had taken to draining the bar dry of whiskey. She didn't like to ask though.
The three oldest Shelby brothers were in the private room again, laughing loudly as they played their cars. It was a Saturday afternoon and the pub was filled with singing. It was only the first weekend that the arrangement for songs hand been put in place, and the people of Small Heath seemed happy.
"Did you want whiskey as well?" Sabrina asked as she entered the snug, pouring the drink that had been ordered.
"No, just beer." He said, looking up at her as she skipped his glass.
"Why no whiskey, Tommy? Are you expecting trouble?" Arthur asked, but he ignored the question, picking up his cards and checking them.
"Jesus Christ, Tommy, what the hell made you let them sing? They sound like they're strangling cats out there." John laughed, as the door was wafted open, sending the voices of the men outside flooding in.
"All right, 20 to play. Come on." Arthur urged as he shifted forward, cigarette in mouth.
"What did make you change your mind though, Tommy?" Arthur asked with a smirk. Tommy glanced up at Sabrina once more, noticing her concealed smile.
"Mmm? Yeah, I mean, it's about time, Tommy." John said with a devilish smirk.
"Time for what?"
"Time you took yourself a woman." He said proudly eye brows raised. "It's that new barmaid, isn't it?"
"I'm thinking about it myself." He added cheekily, with a wink to Sabrina, who flushed a deep purple.
"Just play the bloody hands." Tommy replied, shaking his head, causing his brothers to laugh.
"You stay the way you are, Tommy." Arthur said cheerily, placing down his cards. "Remember what Dad used to say - Fast women and slow horses,"
"will ruin your life." John joined in to state.
There was a loud sound of engines from in front of the snug window, the engines squeaky and rusted. Sabrina left the private room with the bucket of beer and hand, leaving the boys.
"Coppers?" She heard Arthur ask.
"No."
The singing grew louder as Sabrina rounded to her usual place behind the bar. Her petite fingers glided across the stacks of glasses, before pulling one out and going back to her job of polishing. Her thoughts were interrupted by the scuffing of the doors and echoing of slow footsteps.
"Holy shit." Harry said. "It's Billy Kimber."
"Is there any man here named Shelby? The man shouted, his lips snarling. "I said, is there any man here named Shelby?"
"Get these men a drink." Tommy said as he emerged from the private room.
"Everyone else, go home." He shouted, and the people in the pub scrambled to get out.
