Clarke was running on pure adrenalin by the time she had ventured to each of her companions' rooms and told them to prepare. What they were preparing for, she couldn't say exactly. All she could do was tell them to be ready, and to make their way to Madi's room—separately, to avoid detection.

Lexa had been distant after Clarke relayed to her Sierra's warning, volunteering to remain in their room rather than join her in alerting their friends. Though she had insisted nothing was wrong, Clarke still hadn't gotten an explanation about the blood.

She couldn't shake the feeling something was off with Lexa, but fatigue had diminished her ability to concentrate long enough to consider the possibilities.

By the time she had finished spreading word and was back in her room, Clarke still hadn't heard from Sierra. She hoped that the girl hadn't been caught. Their plan wouldn't work without her help--because she was the one who was actually making the plan.

At that very moment, a note slipped under the door, followed by the sound of fading, hurried footsteps.

Clarke practically pounced on the note, giving herself a cut as she unfolded the paper. A small octagonal sheet of metal fell flat into her open palm. It was no bigger than a pebble, but the white edging and glossy quality gave her the sense that it was important somehow. She kept the item in one hand while grasping the note in the other.

Clarke,

I have done what I can to make your journey a safe one.

At precisely 7:28pm, the building's main power will be shut off. This is your only chance to get your friends and get out without triggering the alarm system.

There are three hovers on the rooftop. The key I gave you will work for the one closest to the stairwell.

So that's what the metal object was—a key.

I have logged in the hover for private use, so your departure should go unnoticed long enough for you to get out of the city. There will be two guards stationed on the roof, but I imagine you are resourceful enough to deal with them.

After that, it is up to you to round up the rest of your people and leave this planet.

My superiors are not the forgiving kind. Once they realise you have escaped, they will not hesitate to retaliate. Time is of the essence.

I am sorry for the part I played in all of this. I can only

The sentence ended incomplete, the handwriting towards the end growing messier. Perhaps she was in a rush. In that case, they needed to hurry.

Clarke looked over her shoulder, and was met with Lexa's worried eyes watching her. "We need to go to Madi's room now," she said.

Lexa nodded as her mouth flattened into a thin line.

The suns had set now, the only light being the artificial sort coming from an assortment of lightbulbs arranged on the ceiling. Clarke took Lexa's hand in hers as they left their room—hopefully for the last time.

Clarke let out a breath she hadn't realised she was holding as she took in the sight of her friends, safe and unharmed, sitting spread out on the couched in Madi's room.

Raven and Echo stood as they entered, Madi running over. To Clarke's surprise, her daughter collided with Lexa, greeting her with a hug before she embraced Clarke.

In her heart, Clarke knew she couldn't blame the girl. Lexa had been inside Madi's head, a constant, steady presence. It was natural for her to gravitate towards Lexa, to seek comfort with her just as much as Clarke. If anything, it made Clarke happy knowing that they had already become a family.

"Well?" Raven asked, her foot tapping impatiently on the ground.

"Read this." Clarke handed her the note, which was eventually passed around and read by everyone.

Octavia stood, walking over to the window. "So we're running?"

"We're surviving," Clarke replied.

Octavia scoffed. "Once again, you've put us in danger. You got us into this damned mess and now you think you know what we need to do to survive?"

"What would you have me do, Octavia? Let us all stay here only to be harvested like a bunch of animals?"

With an excruciating slowness, Octavia turned. "Maybe that's what we deserve—what you deserve."

Clarke swallowed and clenched her jaw. They didn't have time for this bickering. Not now. "Look we can discuss this later, we need—"

"You don't get to speak to her like that." That small yet authoritative voice belongs to Madi. "It was my decision to come here, okay? If you want to blame someone, blame me."

"And me," Lexa chimed in, stepping forward to once again take Clarke's hand. "It was my resurrection that let them succeed in their experiments."

Clarke wanted to say something, but she was rendered speechless. Lexa had been the only one to ever understand the true burden of leadership, the only one to tell Clarke her decisions were justified.

And now, having both the love of her life and her daughter stand up for her... It was too much. She didn't deserve this sort of love, this happiness.

To Clarke's surprise, it was Echo who came to her defence next. "We've all done things in the past that we regret. We've all done questionable things to protect our people."

As Echo's eyes met Octavia's, Clarke knew that she was remembering a clifftop battle, a near-death encounter that could have altered all of their fates had it ended differently.

Maybe they all had sins to be forgiven. Maybe there really were no good guys, only damaged people trying to right their wrongs. To be better.

Maybe that was enough.

"As much as I appreciate this heart-to-heart, we have more pressing issues right now."

Clarke nodded, tightening her grip on Lexa's hand and brushing her shoulder against the former commander's. "The note said the power is going off at seven twenty-eight exactly."

Raven yanked up her sleeve. "According to my watch, that's..."

With a sputtering sound, the hum of electricity was yanked from the air, obliterating all light aside from the pale moonlight illuminating the bare minimum of the room.

"...now," she finished.

"I think that means it's go time," Kane said as he rose from his seat.

Clarke felt her pulse quicken. "Stick together. But if it comes down to it, and one of us is taken..." She couldn't bring herself to finish.

Luckily, Lexa could. "One of us needs to make it back and warn the others. No matter what happens, one of us makes it back."

There was a silent agreement that passed between them, not needing words to cement their promise.

"Okay, then. Let's go."
