While visiting New York City shortly after the Beatles broke up, he decided to hang out at a neighborhood park while watching the local kids play hop scotch - fascinated by their rhymes and songs. He was wearing a beard during this period, so wasn't as recognizable - and furthermore looked a little scruffy. A big black guy thought he was up to no good, and accosted him. Paul had to explain that he was visiting from England, using his native charm to put the guy at ease.
