"What happened to me? Where am I?"

"Lucy, you're in the hospital. You're fine."

"Wh-what? Who are you? Who are any of you?"

The man who answers my questions, who calls me Lucy, looks at me, then the doctor as if he is scared. "Doc, why can't she remember me?"

"She has acute amnesia. She may not know who she is even, and her memory may be completely gone."

"Why am I here?"

"I made you fall down the stairs. I didn't do that on purpose! Lucy, I'm sorry. It was an accident! I was drunk and mad."

"I'm sorry. I don't even know who you or who I am."

I feel bad. My memory is gone, and I don't remember anything, anyone, or even myself. I'm like a newborn baby with the mind of an adult. I think...

"It's okay. I'll help you remember everything. I promise I will not give up on you." He holds my hand and kisses it. "You're my wife, and I love you."

"I must have married you because you're so sweet." A soft, loving smile comes across my face, reaching from cheek to cheek.

"I loved you. I know I did, and I can learn to love you again."

His other hand rests on my stomach, so my eyes drift down and look at where his hand is. A big bump on my stomach is under his hand. "What's that?"

I rest my hand on her stomach. She's six months pregnant with our baby boy, but she doesn't remember anything. She looks at me and then at my hand on her stomach. "What's that?"

"Our baby boy."

"A baby? How did it survive after I fell down the stairs?"

"He's a fighter like you." I give her a comforting smile and sit down next to her. "I won't leave you."

Weeks pass before there's any progress whatsoever with Lucy. She's regaining memories back, but not the good ones I want her to remember.
"How could you?! You son of a bitch! You hurt me! You abused me! What kind of grown man does that to a woman?"

"There was shit that happened in my past, Lucy! We got counseling, and I got anger management. We worked it out, and we were hap-"

"Until you pushed me down the stairs and made me forget everything!"

I've never seen her so angry before. Maybe she'll return to herself after a few more weeks or months. What if we could jog her memory?

"Calm down. You don't want to put too much stress on you or the baby." She turns her back to me, takes a couple of deep breaths, and then faces me again. She rests her hands on her stomach and rubs it.

"I'm sorry, honey. I don't mean to. I'm just trying to remember everything before you get here. It's challenging. I love you so much, and you're my little boy."

"This is all my fault, Lucy. I'm so sorry."

"Nathan, things happen for a reason. It's alright. We're all going to be alright. I promise." My hands embrace his, and I pull him into a hug. "I love you to the moon and back."

"I love you more than anything in this entire universe." I wrap my hands around her and feel her stomach touch mine then I feel our baby boy kick. "I love you too, son."
