The she-cat wandered to the clan border, not realizing she had passed into Stormclan territory. She kept walking, her dark feet silent on the ground.
Riverstar walked across the soft, green grass as he led a morning border patrol. "The Gathering is just two nights away", he thought as he walked along, not realizing where he was going.
"Riverstar! Are you okay?" Lionblaze meowed as he crashed into a tree.
"I'm fine," he responded, "just wasn't paying attention". As the border patrol walked on ahead while he caught his breath, Riverstar suddenly heard something in the bushes next to him. Thinking it was a mouse, he inched closer, only to be hit with the smell of CliffClan as Badgerstar walked out of the bushes.
When her face came inches from the yellow eyes of the Stormclan leader her back arched and her tail bristled out. Her claws immediately unsheathed and dug into the ground. When she realized a few foxlengths back she had crossed his border, she hunkered slightly and let her ears fall.
"R-Riverstar," she stuttered her tail flicking nervously
"You know this is StormClan territory, right? You're lucky the entire border patrol didn't see you." Riverstar said.
"I must've just gotten lost and not realized where I was.." meowed Badgerstar defensively. "Really?" replied Riverstar. "We just marked the border and you're telling me that you couldn't smell the scent line?" Badgerstar looked at the ground embarrassingly.
"Okay, maybe I knew I had crossed the line... Just, please don't mention it at the Gathering." "Then tell me why you're here" Riverstar mewed. As the words left his mouth, Riverstar heard Lionblaze calling for him.
"I-I can't... I can't" stuttered Badgerstar, "I'll explain another time, just don't tell anyone I was here, please". Riverstar turned to look for Lionblaze and when he turned back to answer Badgerstar she had already gone.
She raced back to her border and sat down, panting. She was embarrassed about crossing the border, but meeting Riverstar had her adrenaline racing and her blood pumping. She stared at the ground in thought and let her tail sway, almost in a daze. She looked up and saw her deputy padding over to her.
"Badgerstar why are you out here?" He asked and sat down in front of her. She looked away nervously.
"I got lost," she said admitted.
"On your own territory?" He asked. She nodded and gazed out to the side.~Time skip to Gathering~
Badgerstar arrived with her deputy and her three best cats, Liontail, Longface, Cederpelt, and Cloverpatch and of course her medicine cat and his apprentice. She sat on the rock, their designated high spot.
She could help but look for Riverstar. Buzzardstar was sitting on the opposite of her room for the other two leaders between them.
"StormClan is late..." murmured Buzzardstar. Almost as if he had summoned them, StormClan flooded into the clearing from the trees. Riverstar leapt into his spot next to the rest of the leaders. He looked at Badgerstar but said nothing. The leaders began with their usual reports, Buzzardstar starting. After Buzzardstar, it was Riverstar's turn. He stood up. "I am pleased to announce the birth of a new litter of kits to Hollyleaf. The other 3 clans murmured their approval. "StormClan is thriving, we have plenty of prey to feed new mouths and our warriors are strong. He paused and glanced at Badgerstar, then backed down to let the next leader speak. He thought he faintly heard a sigh of relief from Badgerstar, but he couldn't tell for sure.
She had to admit she was glad he showed up, and glad he didn't mention the border patrol. She stood up, "I'm glad to say we are doing good as well, Batwing gave birth to a litter of three," she said, seeing Liontail smile proudly and other congratulate him. She smiled for the first time that night.
"We also have retired another one of our warriors," She meowed looking down at Acornfoot. The young cat flicked her ears to show she actually heard her. She chuckled when she went and sat with the elders and chatted with them about the young cats.
"Cliffclan is doing the best we have in a while this newleaf," she said smiling before sitting back down, her body relaxing again as her shoulders rolled forward.
As Badgerstar finished her report the clans began to return to their territory. Riverstar whispered to Starflight "Go on ahead and take the clan back, I have something to do." Starflight gave him an odd look, but did not object. Badgerstar had watched Riverstar talk to her and then walk into the woods in the opposite direction. She asked Ashtail to take CliffClan back to its territory. She then cautiously followed Riverstar into the woods.
She sat down near him in the clearing.
"Did you need something?" She asked softly, her voice slightly wavering. She couldn't hardly bring herself to make eye contact with him. She managed to meet his gaze at one point and blushed brightly, looking away again and nervously flexing her large claws.
Riverstar stared ahead. After a while he spoke. "We shouldn't be here. This is wrong, especially when it's two clan leaders!" Badgerstar looked at him silently. Riverstar stood up and began to walk away. "I have to go" he meowed. Badgerstar watched him go and said nothing as he vanished into the undergrowth.
"Wait!" She tried to say but he was already gone. She was embarrassed and ashamed of herself for being so head over tail for a leader of another clan. She laid down where she was and decided not to go back to her camp that night. She didn't want to show her face to others so she stayed there. She covered her face with her paws.
Riverstar walked through the forest thinking about Badgerstar. He wanted to talk to her but he knew that the consequences could be terrible. What if he couldn't be the leader of StormClan anymore? He knew that if anything happened between them that no one could know.
She decided she needed to catch up and talk to him. She ran silently over the grassy, forest floor, and caught up to the large tom cat. "Riverstar," she said softly, hoping he wouldn't get mad at her for following him. "I'm sorry I followed you, but we need to talk," she said wishing he'd take the time to speak with her. "Please Riverstar, just listen!" she mewed.
Riverstar turned to look at her. "I want to, but do you understand how bad this could be? Two clan leaders talking like this?" They both remained silent. "We can't talk here. We have to go somewhere else." Riverstar decided.
She looked down and nodded thinking he was going to turn her down. When he said they can talk she perked up, "I know a cave outside of all the clans," she said and darted away, her sharp claws helping her propel forward, in the hopes of no one seeing them. She stopped and waited for him at the cave entrance. She sat down and flicked her tail as she watched him, admiring his sleek coat and yellow eyes.
Riverstar sprinted behind her, barely managing to keep up. As he reached the mouth of the cave he slowed to a stop and stared at Badgerstar. He was close enough to feel her breathing on his face. Eventually he shook his head and backed away.
Her face flushed as he stood close to her. When he backed up she snapped out of it and led him into the cave. "No one can hear us or see us in here," she said smiling slightly at him. She sat down in a smallish room of the cave and wrapped her tail over her paws.
Riverstar stared back at Badgerstar's glowing blue eyes in the darkness. He thought to himself how beautiful they were but didn't say it out loud. "We don't have much time..." meowed Riverstar quietly.
"We could always just stay here for the night, right?" replied Badgerstar.
Riverstar looked at the cave longingly. "What would we tell our clanmates?" he asked.
"We're clan leaders, silly, we don't have to tell them anything." Badgerstar meowed happily. She was actually proud of that idea.
"Come on," she purred trying to guilt him into staying with her. "Well I'm staying even if you don't," she decided stubbornly. She gazed at him waiting for his response, hoping he decided to stay. She kneaded the ground anxiously.
Riverstar, after thinking it over, half excitedly, half regrettably followed her into the cave. They silently sat in the darkness for a while before Badgerstar fell asleep, and Riverstar soon followed.
As Riverstar opened his eyes he could see the morning light from outside flooding into the cave in front of him. He glanced over at Badgerstar, who was still peacefully asleep at his side.
She woke up and stretched out, yawning. Her whiskers twitched at the familiar smell of Riverstar. "You ended up staying all night?" She asked him tiredly. She rolled closer to him soaking up his body heat. She curled her tail around him and smiled slightly.
"No, I just woke up" Riverstar replied. "It's nice outside, isn't it?" He stretched and tasted the air. The birds were beginning to sing outside and the mice we're starting to rustle in the leaves. Riverstar tried to catch one as it darted between his paws but he missed and the mouse disappeared into the undergrowth.
She chuckled when the mouse easily escaped his paws. She lightly stepped across the leaves and skillfully trapped a mouse under her paws. She quickly bit it, killing it. She brought it over to him and dropped it in front of him. She sat back down and watched the mice scurry around.
Riverstar gratefully took a bite of the mouse before walking to the mouth of the cave. Looking into the forest, Riverstar could see the rays from the Sun shining through the trees. He knew that he needed to return to StormClan soon.
Badgerstar stepped to his side and brushed her shoulder against his. "We have to go," she sighed softly, "thank you for staying with me," she added, not wanting to go back to her lonely den without him. She leaned her smaller body against his and gently purred.
Riverstar watched as Badgerstar disappeared into the undergrowth in the direction of CliffClan. He stood there for a while looking after her before turning in the direction of his own clan.
