Badgerstar woke up in her empty den, a wave of sadness washed over her as she looked around. She had been sneaking off to meet with StormClan's leader for a few moons, but she was still upset when they had to part ways.
She was glad no one ever mentioned the faint scent of the tom that lingered on her fur. They were supposed to meet at sunhigh and she was trying to contain her excitement about meeting during the day. She had scouted out a spot fairly distant from all clans. She ate and groomed before telling her Deputy she was patrolling borders by herself, which Ashtail had stopped questioning.
Riverstar sat at the edge of StormClan territory staring into the distance. He was excited as usual to meet with Badgerstar, but he always had a bad feeling about it. As much as he enjoyed his time with her, he wasn't always sure if it was worth the risk that they were taking.
She saw him at their border and happily ran over to him, "hello," she cooed and pressed her nose into his cheek. She purred as she sat down with him.
Riverstar looked at Badgerstar and smiled. "It's nice out today, isn't it?" he meowed. "Good day for hunting..." Badgerstar nodded happily. As Riverstar opened his mouth to speak again, a finch landed on a low tree branch in several fox-lengths in front of him. He silently crept towards the small bird, keeping his tail off the ground to keep from disturbing the fallen leaves. As soon as he was close enough he leapt towards the bird and hooked it with his claw before it had time to react, killing it swiftly.
"Wow you actually caught something," she teased him bumping into him. "Finches are stringy and dry," she complained to make fun of his prey. "I'm glad I can catch mice and rabbits, much tastier," she meowed sticking out her tongue at him.
Riverstar was stung a little by what she said but brushed it off. "Think you can do better?" he teased before running into the forest.
She giggled and chased after him, "I know I can do better," she replied easily keeping up to him. She stopped in her tracks when she saw a large looming figure up ahead, a dog. It had already smelled them and its amber eyes stared directly at them.
"R-Riverstar," she whimpered, backing up I to his side and pressing into him, "we need to warn the clans,"
Riverstar stood frozen, staring at the dog. "Come on!" Badgerstar cried. He shook his head and started to run towards his camp. He ran harder as he felt the hot breath of a dog behind him. "I can't lead it to the camp", he thought. He noticed a tree with a low hanging branch and lept for it, pulling himself over the branch as fast as he could before turning to look down at the dog. It was jumping for him, but couldn't quite reach the branch he was perched on. "I can't get down now, I'll just have to wait for it to lose interest" he meowed to himself quietly. After what seemed like hours, the dog became tired of whining began to walk back towards where he and Badgerstar had first encountered them. "Badgerstar!" he thought. "What if one of the dogs managed to catch her?" He leapt down from his spot on the branch and worriedly started to run to the StormClan camp.
Badgerstar had outran the dog and skidded to a stop on the dirt floor of the camp. "Everyone, either help elders, kits, and queens, or follow me to help warn the others," she said. She turned to go find the other leader while her deputy and clan hid or warned the others.
"Riverstar!" She yowled, hoping he'd hear her. She was worried about herself getting caught by a dog but she was even more terrified for him.
Riverstar burst through the bramble thicket surrounding the StormClan camp entrance. Cats all around the clearing stared at him, confused. "What is it, Riverstar?" Starflight asked. Riverstar stood, panting, "D-dogs. There's 4 that we saw." "We?" inquired Starflight, but Riverstar had already turned away to inform the rest of the clan.
Badgerstar caught up with him when they went to inform Buzzardstar of the dogs in their territory. She raced alongside him, keeping slow enough for him to keep up. They watched as Buzzardstar started directing his clan. They got to the other clan and left before noticing what they did. She needed to find her deputy and warriors, her clan.
Riverstar stood, watching cats dart around him when he saw the first dog appear over the hill in front of him. Before he had a chance to speak, 4 other dogs crested the hill. "Dogs!" Riverstar yowled as they began to run towards the clan cats.
Her tail bristled at the toms warning. "Riverstar," she said falling into step with him. "How do I lead this? I've never had to do this," she said, worried about her clan not making through if she gave bad instructions.
"You'll be fine", Riverstar replied before turning to Starflight. "Go to the camp, make sure the queens and kits are all safe. "Get Spottedfur, too. We're going to need her." Riverstar watched Starflight turn away and race towards camp. He turned to face the dogs approaching the clan cats, silently praying to StarClan.
Foxpelt was getting his herbs and medicines ready to help all of the clans. Longface and Liontail were already fighting a dog with three mountain clan cats. She watched the warriors fight and leapt into battle. She stood next to Riverstar and hissed at the dog, showing her long fangs and unsheathing her badger-like claws.
A dog rushed down the hill at Riverstar, lunging at him. He managed to move out of its way just in time. He turned, sinking his teeth into its neck and biting down until he tasted blood. The dog yelped in pain and tried to bit Riverstar but he was too quick, backing away from the dog before it had a chance to attack him.
Although the dog missed its target didn't mean it didn't still get something. Badgerstar hissed when the dog clamped his large jaws on her hind leg. She tugged it a bit, trying to ignore the searing pain, but the dogs grip was like a vice. She heard a crunch, feeling it's teeth sink through. She howled in pain and sunk her claws into the soft dirt.
Riverstar lunged at the dog's leg and bit down as hard as he could. The dog unlatched its jaws in Surprise and stumbled. After taking a look at the two cats, the dog turned and fled.
The dog, when it turned to run it took clumps of fur with it. She fell to the ground, tired from fighting and in pain. Her hind leg was littered in tooth marks and splattered in blood. The blood dripped onto the dusty ground and clotted.
"Spottedfur!" yowled Riverstar. "I'm here, I'm he- oh my!" Spottedfur replied in astonishment of Badgerstar's leg. As Spottedfur began to gather her supplies, Riverstar noticed 3 other dogs chasing several CliffClan apprentices who were headed straight for their camp. Badgerstar saw it, too. "The dogs can't get to the camp" she meowed through gritted teeth as she stood up, despite Spottedfur's protests and broke into a run towards her camp.
She tore off, the immense pain of her leg gone as she ran. She stopped in her tracks when she saw a body lying in the middle of the camp, clumps of fur missing and bloody gashes. She looked down and gasped realized the body belonged to Hazedsight, an elder from the original clan. She Was shocked to see his ragged body out in the open. She managed to find one dog and immediately started fighting. She wished Riverstar was there to give her more courage. Her white socked paws were drenched in the red ooze from her leg and the elders wound. She fought the dog until it tucked it's tail and ran away. She panted and held her leg up to keep pressure off of it.
Riverstar yowled a warning at the CliffClan camp, hoping it would be heard as he watched the dogs get closer to  the camp entrance. He ran harder, but he knew he wouldn't be able to catch them before they reached the entrance. He let out one last warning as the dogs reached the camp and poured through the entrance.
Her warriors were already attacking dogs. After a few minutes the dogs ran, leaving the territories. She collapsed on the ground and look at their camp, completely destroyed. "Riverstar," she meowed softly, seeing the handsome tom at the camp entrance. She didn't get up to get to him because of her leg, instead she just tried to get his attention.
Riverstar looked in horror at the camp. There were injured cats everywhere. As he stood, frozen, staring at the cats. Spottedfur pushed her way through the entrance behind him and gasped at what she saw. She ran to Hazedsight, but Badgerstar stopped her, explaining that he was already dead.
"It's useless," she murmured. "He's gone," she said quietly, limping over to Spottedfur. "He was suffering anyways. Blind and going deaf." She sighed and looked over at the young medicine cat. "Thanks you for trying though," she added and gazed at the dead cat.
Riverstar looked at Badgerstar. "We have to go... I need to check on my clanmates." She nodded and he turned towards the entrance, giving her one last look before sliding through the camp wall. Spottedfur followed him through the entrance. Spottedfur glanced at Riverstar. "Riverstar?" "Hm?" he meowed. "I need to talk to you when we get back to camp. It's important." Riverstar just nodded, but he couldn't help but wonder if she had noticed the way he had been looking at Badgerstar, but he tried to push it out of his mind. He had more important things to worry about right now.
She knew he didn't want to be seen around her, she knew they could get in trouble, she knew he had his clan to worry about, but it still stung when he left without seeing if she was ok. "Clan leaders can see if other clan cats are ok without getting in trouble," Badgerstar thought. She was scared to death the entire time and he brushed it all off. She didn't want to feel that way but she couldn't help it. She rolled to her side, panting and letting her leg rest.
