Epilogue
"And now we'll hear from Kathryn McDermott."
Kathryn walked up the podium, surrounded by lilies and a large picture of her mother. She took a deep breath and looked around her. The pews were filled and a soft music played in the background. She looked down to see her wife and their children sitting in the front. They were all wearing black, except Elizabeth. She demanded she would wear her pink sash around her dress. It made her smile a little. Cole looked uncomfortable in his suit. What eighteen year old likes to wear a suit?
"Four years ago we lost a great man. Stan McDermott left us too soon from a heart attack. That caused Laura a lot of pain and a broken heart. She cried every day for him and she tried her best to carry on his legacy. She came to me three years ago asking for help and I said no. She cause my family and me great pain. I should have taken that chance. Not even a year later, she was diagnosed with cancer. The woman that gave birth to me and my sisters was sick.
"We took care of her like she did us when we were five and we all came down with the stomach flu at the same time. We were there for her when she needed us, until the very end. I remember the exact moment she turned to me and said what I've yearned for her to say for four years. She opened her eyes, her brow was what with perspiration.
'Kathryn, I love you. I don't like that you're married to a woman and I probably won't ever, but that doesn't mean that I don't love you. Never forget that, Katydid.'
"I'm happy to say she lived long enough to meet her grandchildren and she died happy. Happy knowing she made peace here, but also she knew that she was meeting dad again after so long. She loved that man and we know that they will look after each other wherever there are now."
Kathryn took her leave and went to sit down with her family. She sat in between Natalie and Cole. They both took her hands and she gripped them tightly, trying not to cry. Three years ago she vowed wouldn't let the woman make her cry again but had that stopped her from bawling her eyes out like a baby? She was twenty-eight now, or that's what she liked telling people anyway, and she should act like an adult.
They finished the eulogy and went home. Kathryn went straight to the liquor cabinet and filled a glass with wine. She gulped it down and thought of all the times her mother made her angry or insulted her. She turned around and saw Cole and Elizabeth flinch. What?
"Kathryn stop. Put the glass down and go to our room, I'll be up to talk to you later."
She nodded her head and started toward the stairs, but paused and turned to look at Cole and Elizabeth.
"I may get mad and I may have an occasional drink, but I will never hurt you. I love you."
With those parting words she went to her room and lay down in her bed. She turned on her side facing away from the door. A few minutes later she felt tiny hands hugging her. She turned to see Elizabeth looking at her, crying.
"I know you would never hurt us Mommy, don't be sad. I didn't mean to make you cry."
Elizabeth was surprised to find tears falling off her face. She sat up and hugged Elizabeth hard.
"I love you, Ellie."
Cole came up a second later and sat down next to them. He rested his hand on Kathryn's shoulder and when she looked at him, he smiled reassuringly. They turned to look at Natalie who was smiling at them.
"I don't need to cry anymore because I have the best family anyone could ever wish for."
