Rafe Khatchadorian was special. He loved to draw, often daydreaming about his drawings and what their personalities would be like.
But today was his first day of school, and he didn't even get a wink of sleep. He was up all night drawing in his sketchbook.
Rafe was startled by the sudden beeping of his alarm clock.
"You guys wanna handle this for me?" he asked his characters.
"On it, boss." The first head of the two headed beast responded.
"On it." replied the second.
"I just said that."
The drawing popped out of the book and bounded over Rafe's leg and said,
"Why do you even set this thing, Rafe, if you're not going to sleep?"
The two heads fought over the blaster, which soon resulted in ones head that got blasted off.
Rafe chuckled and suddenly heard the familiar footsteps of his mother coming in his room. He looked up in panic and quickly shoved his notebook under the covers and pulled his blankets up.
"Rafe? Rise and shine buddy." Jules voice called.
"Rafe? Are you up? Wake up." she said again, walking swiftly to Rafe's bedside.
The teenage boy turned around and stretched his arms.
"What? Oh boy, is it morning already?" he said.
Jules groaned.
"Please tell me you did not stay up all night drawing again."
"No, of course not. No, the only reason I would ever be up all night is just because I'm so excited to go to school today. But I wasn't up all night." he lied.
"Come here."
"Why?"
Jules licked her thumb and wiped it across Rafe's forehead, removing the visible ink stain.
"Gross. What are you doing?"
"I'm wiping the excitement off your face. It looks a lot like ink."
Jules then held out her hand, as if expecting something from him. The boy sighed and stuck his hand under the covers and pulled out his sketchbook and handed it to his mother.
Suddenly, his younger sister, Georgia , came in to Rafe's room holding their pug, Calvin Giggles.
"Mom, where's my breakfast?" she asked.
"It's coming." Jules replied, while flipping through Rafe's book.
"Georgia, for the millionth time, Calvin's not allowed in my room." the boy said.
Calvin responded with a whine.
"For the billionth time, it's Mr. Giggles to you. And just because you're grumpy doesn't give you the right to make the rest of us miserable." Georgia responded.
"Okay guys, come on." Jules said, eyes still trained on the pages filled with drawings.
"Let's go Calvin, we don't have to take this." Georgia said.
"You know, hon, I have to say, really impressive updates for the Vinlothian Star Cruiser." Jules said with a smile on her face.
"Thanks."
Rafe reached for his notebook, but his mother pulled it away from his grasp.
"Look, I know it's hard, starting a new school mid-semester, and I don't want to take this away from you," Jules said and mentioned towards Rafe's sketchbook.
