*The next morning.*

Sometime over night we drove right into California. We're parked at a gas station and the guys wake me up for a pee break and a snack run. I walk out of the bus into the chilly weather of Sacramento. The sun is out and it feels warm against my skin. I stand on the sidewalk facing the sun, just soaking it in, wrapped in a hoodie.

"What the hell are you doing?" Jay asks me.

Oh god he's mad! He's so mad at you right now!

I ignore the thoughts that have been tormenting me for the past five almost six months. As I always do.

"We don't get much sun in Portland." I say quietly.

"Okay then. Come on lets get in there before the guys get kicked out again." Jay says leading me towards the doors of the drugstore.

I flinch slightly at Jay's hands on my shoulders but I let him lead me into the gas station.

Once inside, I head for the candy aisle. I pick out some sour candies and some bubble gum. I also grab a soda in a glass bottle because everyone knows it's better in bottle and hot chips. Compared to what the guys grabbed, I have close to nothing. These guys literally have diabetes in powder doughnut form.

"How do you not have diabetes? Put half of that stuff back." I say.

Bad thing to say! They're going to get mad at you!

I get a little scared at this thought and I know my face has paled significantly. They look at what I have, at what they have, and then each other. They all look at me like 'What did you just say to me?'

Get more confidence! Give them a reason!

"You guys are going to get sick! I don't want to take care of you and your sugar sickness! Put that back!" I say.

Zak sticks his tongue out at me and grumpily puts all the powdered doughnuts back. The rest of guys follow.

Thank god! Your alive! Don't do anything like that again, okay?

A few moments later they have equally balanced out the sugar and the mostly healthy snacks. The cashier chuckles as she scans the items. She eyes Dakota. She even has the nerve to ask him if he's single and gives him her number. Seriously, she wrote her number on the back of the receipt. Not that I'm jealous or anything because I'm totally not jealous. I don't have a crush on him either so don't bother asking. As we load onto the bus, Zak stops me just outside the door.

This is where I die...

"What was up with you in there?" He asks.

"What do you mean?" I ask confused.

"You gave that girl a dirty look after she started checking him out."

"No I didn't."

"You totally did. Do you like Dakota or something?"

"Ew, no I don't."

He looks at me like 'you dumb bitch yes you do. I can smell the bullshit coming off you.' But he lets it go and gets onto the bus. Dakota looks at me quizzically as I sit down across from him at the little table. I'm kind of glad he didn't ask me about it anymore. Truth is, I've had a crush on Dakota since I first saw him.

Or not.... keep your guard up. Don't let them in. They're keeping you alive for now.

"What happened out there?" He asks me.

I shake my head implying I don't want to talk about it. We sit in silence eating our snacks, listening to the others talk. My phone buzzes and I pull it out of my pocket.
