It was about a week until school started back up. Mom was dragging us along to go shopping. She excitedly went from store to store, picking out the brightest clothing she could find for Ella. And of course, those god-awful matching family socks. I tried to stay out of it. The few things I chose were primarily black, the dominant color of my wardrobe. She strongly disapproved. They barely even made it into the cart before she put them back on the shelf, stating "It's too dark, try something brighter. " I hated shopping with her. Fortunately, we only went shopping together before school, every other time I went alone.
I walked away from the kids section, where Mom was throwing in every ruffly, colorful, patterned thing she could find. Strolling through the isles, the colors that surrounded me made me sick. I really did not like bright anything. Lights, colors, personalities. I found a few stray garments that didn't make me want to puke my guts and headed towards the dressing room.
Mom would most definitely have a fit when she saw what I picked out. It wasn't necessarily that bad. A little midriff but besides that, nothing crazy bad. But that never mattered to her. You learn to live with it after a while I guess. I decided to check out before Mom saw and vetoed everything. She was still having a rainbow meltdown in the kid's section with Ella. The line was short and I got through just as my mother entered.
