WHITEHORSE INDEPENDENT PRIVATE SCHOOL 8:23AM FRIDAY APRIL 7TH 1967
linda grunted as she hauled her worn out suitcase into the back of the truck. the sun was out for the first time in a while, just in time for spring break. normally, she would be ecstatic that the weather was warming up, she could finally switch from the hot vests and long sleeves to the tee shirts in the school uniform.
at the moment, however, she couldn't enjoy the suns rays beating down on her because she was already sweating, trying to get her spring break bag into the bed of her brothers truck. she grunted again before dropping the bag on the ground in defeat. she swiveled her head to look for her brother, spotting him trying to talk up some girls on the steps of the school. she rolled her eyes as the girls looked absolutely enthralled with him.
"richie!" she called impatiently, "come on!"
richie winked at her and grinned before turning back to the girls. linda jokingly tapped her foot and rolled her eyes again. richie said his parting words to the girls and bounded down the front steps two at a time.
linda and inherited the long legs just as richie had, but she stood at 5'8 while richie towered above her and everyone else at 6'2. he had grown quite a lot since the last time she had seen him. linda had been this tall since 7th grade, right before she transferred to the private school. when she was younger, she towered over the boys her age and never got asked on a date once, even though kids were coupling off left and right.
(she knew it wasn't her fault, and continued to focus on her schooling, which is what got her into this school in the first place. she worked so hard because she wanted OUT of derry, at least temporarily and she knew her drunken parents could never afford it. so linda got a full scholarship and earned her place. she also earned the name smart-ass from her brother and his friends. )
once she got a bit older and the boys started growing, too, they liked her long legs and all of a sudden, all the boys at whitehorse had a crush on her. some would try to get close to her first, some would ask her out even though they were strangers, some would leave her letters and some would drop to their knees and profess their love in the middle of the hallways.
linda had never been much for boys anyways.
"how's the parentals, rich?" linda almost had to yell over the music blaring out of the truck. richie sighed and reluctantly turned down the radio. he looked over at her and shook his head, the grin dropping off his face.
"fuck the parentals" he mumbled and linda laughed. when they were 11, she had pestered richie to apply to whitehorse, too. they both knew, even back then, that their parents couldn't offer them anything. linda wanted out so badly, and she knew richie did, too.
