DERRY, MAINE    MARSH HOUSEHOLD       9:04 PM      SATURDAY APRIL 8TH 1967

beverly sighed as she hastily washed the dishes.  she hadn't done much all day, sitting around her house and basking in the relaxation of her father's absence. she managed to clean her whole bedroom and take at least two naps before succumbing to the guilt and finally washing the ever-growing mountain of dishes in her small kitchen. beverly had severely underestimated just how many dishes there were to do and it was too late to stop doing them once she realized that she'd more than likely be stood at the counter for the rest of her youth.

she was meant to meet richie, his sister and eddie at richie's house to hang out at 9, but it was too late to hope of making it by then. once she finally reached the bottom of the pile, beverly hurried to haul on a sweater over her tee shirt and get to richie's.

she hadn't slept particularly well that night. beverly had lid down in her bed, tossing and turning, but was unable to fall asleep. she was thinking about someone. namely, linda tozier.

beverly remembered the first time she had seen linda. they were both 15, and it was the first summer (besides the year of the clown) that beverly had spent with richie. none of the losers had left town at that point, so everyone hung out in a big group. linda was still gorgeous back then, but beverly couldn't see anything past richie. they may be best friends now, but she would be lying if beverly said she didn't have a huge schoolgirl crush on him for a while. after getting to know him it disappeared as they were too similar. they had almost identical sense's of humor and somewhat the same personality. they worked better as friends. but, for that summer she had been infatuated, and linda didn't even cross her mind.

the most recent time she had seen linda was the summer before, roughly seven months ago. linda was only in town for a few days, before disappearing with her brother on a road trip of sorts. the tozier siblings had spent two months on the road, only returning for school. richie had sent postcards whenever they stopped long enough in a place for him to write her a letter. they usually consisted of two or three sentances of scratchy writing saying he was sorry he left her there but wherever he was was pretty amazing. beverly had spent that summer with eddie, because they had both been ditched by richie tozier.

after a while, beverly reached underneath her pillow and pulled out a polaroid picture. she stared at the breathtaking photo until her eyelids got heavy, too heavy to keep open, and she finally fell asleep.

when richie had dropped her off that night, she had an internal debate about whether or not it was worth the risk of her dad taking her camera to bring her backpack into the house. she wanted to take the picture with her inside, so she could look at it whenever she pleased. she wanted it around, just so she knew it was there. in the end, she left the camera and bag in richie's beat up chevy and took the single picture with her.
