Chapter 5
A Night Sky For Wishing
Raven held onto a woman's hand "Mommy why do we only come out when it's dark?" she looked up into the dark eyes that matched hers.
The woman smiled softly leaning the child's head against her holding her tight. "Because I want to keep you safe" she whispered softly.
"Kori gets to go out when its day. Does her mother not want to keep her safe?" she asked
Raven's mother took the child's hand holding it tight. "Kori is... different"
"I want to do things like Kori," Raven said softly.
Raven's mother stood kneeling down to the child sitting on the bench "You can" she smiled
Raven smiled "Like what?" her eyes widened "I want to do it now."
The woman held the child's hands in hers "should I tell you something you can do now like Kori?" Raven nodded. The woman looked up, then pointed to the sky "that"
Raven looked confused "The sky?" Raven asked.
The woman nodded "Yes, Like Kori and all the others...you can look at the stars and the moon. You can count the stars, watch the moon change, In the summer you can catch the lightning bugs, and in the fall see the leaves fall in the moonlight. There is a lot you can do like Kori "
Raven looked up at the sky that looked like a dark blue through the limbs of a tree "Kori gets to look at the stars?"
Raven's mother sat back on the bench "mhm, and so do you." she smiled down at her daughter.
"What's so great about looking at stars?" Raven looked at the sky trying to find a reason.
"Should I tell you a secret?" The woman looked up as well.
Raven looked at her mother "A SECRET?"
"Those stars" she pointed "Look really close dont they" she smiled.
Raven looked up "Mhm, aren't they?" she asked now looking at her mother who shook her head.
"No, they are really far away from each other" she held the child's hand tighter "even if they are far away they are still really close. She smiled "Take me for example if one day I was to go away somewhere far, I would always be close to you where you can see in here. She held a hand to the child's chest.
Raven looked at the sky wondering how such tiny things had such sad meanings "stars sound so sad, what's so special about them then."
"Do you think they sound sad?" her mother looked at her. Raven nodded. "Stars are also very good and happy"
"How so?" Raven tilted her head, her dark hair falling to the side.
"Sometimes you'll see a shooting star, you have to look really hard to find one because they disappear like that " she snapped her fingers causing Raven to laugh. "If you blink you might miss it, and you can't always see one. You have to truly want to see one."
Raven smiled "A shooting star, what's that do if a see one?" she tried to find one.
The woman smiled looking at her daughter "They grant you a wish"
Raven turned "A wish," she said softly
"Yes, when you see one close your eyes really fast. The wish might not come true right away but one-day, if you truly want it, it will come true."
"I want it, I do, more than anything" She looked desperately in her mother's eyes.
"Then," she pointed to the sky "You'll have to look really hard for one" Raven nodded not looking away and up to the sky, nothing broke her concentration. "Wish from the bottom of your heart" Raven nodded slightly. "And never forget the wish in here" she held her hand to Raven's chest again. "In your heart" a tear escaped her eyes but she wiped it away before Raven could see.
-----------------------
"Come on, hurry" Kori tried to push Raven faster down the hallway. "The award ceremony is going to start and we have to find a seat together.
Raven sighed "Why do I have to watch such things anyway?" she rolled her eyes.
Kori opened the huge double doors leading to a room filled with countless seats people were squirming to sit with a stage in front. "There," Kori pointed pulling raven down the center aisle to two seats on the end. Raven sat on the end and Kori sat beside her. Raven let out a sigh sitting back in her seat knowing she would be there for a while. "You know" Kori leaned onto Raven's shoulder "You would not have to watch if you were one of the students on the stage." Kori pointed to the row of students sitting in lines of chairs on the stage.
"No thank you" Raven smiled
Kori sighed "I know you could if you wanted. I know how smart you are" she laughed slightly. "I know you get lower grades on purpose." Kori sounded sad.
"Yes, and I would like to keep it that way" Raven looked at Kori. "Getting perfect grades means getting on that stage. Having my picture taken and acknowledged isn't exactly what my father wants." she lowered her head.
"I heard what happened in class this morning, I'm sorry I was late or I would have given it to him good." Kori put on a tough face.
Raven laughed "I'm sure you would but please don't go getting into any fights, Kori. Somehow I feel It would just end up with me trying to sort it out."
------------------------
Gar was quiet "Dude you haven't said a word since we left the restaurant" Cyborg looked back at Garfield who was lagging behind.
Gar looked up realizing how far he was. "Oh, I was just thinking" he yelled catching up.
"Don't let it get to you so much" Richard patted his back. "If it's what we talked about, then just figure it out as you go." he smiled
"Figure it out as I go?" Gar looked confused
Richard sighed "Don't force yourself to understand your feelings all at once. Instead, get to know them slowly with time. That way you'll know for sure how you feel without questioning it.
Gar hung his head and smiled "You know Richard, for someone who has never been in a relationship you can give some good advice." Gar looked up at him.
"I can give you some advice too." Victor turned around to face his friends. "Don't take her to one of your vegan places" Victor laughed. Gar narrowed his eyes and smirked at the comment.
"If you really want some good advice" Richard went serious "The best I could give you other than that is...Don't treat her like all the girls you've gone out with and dumped in the past."
---------------------------
A black car pulled up to the school. "Mr.Skaath, it's a pleasure" an older man reached out his hand to shake the gentleman's as he stepped from the car. "My name is Mr.Harth, the principal."
Trenton shook the man's hand "indeed, is the chairman Mr.Logan here?" he asked looking around for the man.
"Not today sir, he had business to attend to." he showed the man to the entrance of the building followed by Mrs.Anders. "The ceremony will begin shortly is there any questions you have?"
Trenton sighed looking around "Hmm...Will all the students be attending?"
Mr.Harth nodded "Yes sir, was there a student you wanted to see? One of the students receiving an award perhaps?"
Trenton chuckled with a smirk "Not in particular"
"Sir" a secretary pulled the principle over to the side "The video's from this morning with Mr.Logans son are being taken care of but, those students over there" she pointed to a few seated students "have the last recordings."
Mr.Harth turned to face Trenton "I'm terribly sorry, there has been a video going around school we are trying to take care of if you don't mind waiting a moment while I take care of it?" he motioned to the students sitting.
Trenton nodded "please do so" he smiled.
The principal called the name of a student who came into the room "You have a video from this morning?" Mr.Harth asked reaching his hand out "Phone, hand it to me"
the student sighed placing the phone in his hand "this is stupid" he mumbled under his breath. He glanced up at Trenton and Mrs.Anders standing, rolling his eyes."It's not like I'm in high school"
The principal played the video "This is it correct?" he held it up showing the student.
"Yes," the student scoffed.
Trenton furrowed his brows stepping forward. "Can I see that video?" he asked in a cold tone.
Mr.Harth looked up "Of course" he handed the video over. "It was between two students this morning. We had to do something considering the image it would put on the school and the other student was a Logan. It was getting out of hand going around the school."
Trenton's face grew colder as the video played. He clenched his fist with a snarl. "Is this the last of the videos?" he asked looking up crooking his neck
"Yes sir, may I ask why you're interested?" Mr.Harth asked.
Trenton handed back the phone fixing his suit "this is a school im fond of since ill is presiding over the award ceremony. Of course, I would care about its reputation." he lied.
Trenton turned to face Mrs.Anders "After the ceremony, find her and bring her to me," he said softly away from the ears of others.
---------------------------
Richard, Gar, and Victor entered the auditorium. "Over here Gar" some girls waved for him to sit with them. He turned giving them a smile and wave. Richard rolled his eyes.
Gar looked around, someone caught his eye, Raven. She was sitting on the end of an aisle with Kori. "I'm gonna go over here," he said not taking his eyes of Raven walking past Richard and Victor who were sitting down.
"Hey" he smiled kneeling down beside Raven.
Raven turned around looking down "Can I help you?" she asked.
Gar stood placing his hands in his pockets "Nope, but Kori can" he smiled lovingly over to Kori. Gar turned back to face Richard giving him a wink.
"Me? How can I... help you?" Kori asked confused.
Gar looked her in the eyes "Richard wants you to sit with him, will you?" he asked.
"Kori looked back at Richard causing his face to turn completely red "I-I don't know, should I?" she turned to Raven.
Raven smiled, Gar smiled at that. "Go on, and have fun" Kori gave her a hug and walked past up to Richard. Gar turned back to Richard smiling.
"I guess this seat is free now" He walked past Raven sitting in the seat Kori was in.
Raven sighed "don't you think bothering me once today is enough?"
Gar looked forward "I said I was sorry" he tilted his head looking at her. Raven didn't say anything she thought It was best to just ignore him. He sat looking at her scanning her face, how she breathed and moved. He tilted forward to see the front of her face smiling slightly. "Do I like her? She's not unattractive....how do I start to figure it out?"
Raven turned around feeling eyes on her "What?" she said dryly, he was closer than she thought." She backed up, "Wh-what?" she asked again softer.
Gar lowered his eyes then looked back at her slowly "I was just thinking...figuring something out" he smiled sitting back.
Raven thought for a moment "Thinking?"
Gar didn't look at her "Mhm, about something" he smiled to himself looking forward, Raven watched.
Raven sat back in her seat to looking forward "figure it out slowly" She said lightly.
Gar turned to face her "What?"
Raven didn't look at him, she smiled "I may not like you..." she hung her head. "But, thinking about things too fast leaves you having to figure more things out. I'm an expert in those things."
"Richard said the same thing," Gar smirked.
"He's smart" Raven added.
Gar watched her. It was the first time it seemed she opened up to him. Maybe she did not realize it or maybe she did, but it made him feel happy.
The principal walked onto the stage to a podium "Thank You, Students...Today Mr.Logan could not be here so we have a special guest who will be presiding over the ceremony. We are very happy to have him at our school." Mr.Harth turned to the right "Please welcome Mr.Trenton Skaath." Mr.Harth clapped followed by countless others.
Raven's eyes widened as she clenched the arms of the seat. "Why was her father her?" Raven looked back at Kori who was just as shocked at her. She looked forward as the sound of clapping seemed to fade around her.
Trenton walked to the stage scanning the crowd laying his eyes on Raven smirking, then the other students. "Your dad is not here?" Raven panicked.
Gar sighed "No, he has work to attend to. but it's great we get someone like Mr.Skaath to be here" he smiled "You know him?"
Raven tried to even her breathing "Y-yeah doesn't everyone?"
Gar turned to face Raven hearing her uneasy voice "Are you okay?" he asked, Raven nodded. He looked down seeing her knuckles turn white from holding onto the arm of the chair. "Rae?" he called placing his hand over hers hoping to calm down whatever it was. She was strangely acting like this morning.
Raven felt his hand and jerked him away "Don't touch me."
"Alright, just calm down." Gar looked at her.
Name after name was called, each second making Raven feel more uneasy. "Why was he here? And most of all, why hadn't he told her?" she thought. The ceremony ended, Raven jumped from her seat looking at the man on stage who smiled at her with a smile that made her even more scared.
Gar held her wrist holding her back. Raven turned to look at the hand holding her, then up to Gar. "let go" Raven tried to let out. She looked back on stage where Trenton was watching.
"We have to go, I'm sorry!" Kori looked apologetic jerking Raven away from Gar dragging the distraught Raven behind her and out of the auditorium.
-------------------------
Kori sat on the bed of raven's dorm as Raven paced back and forth biting her lip. "Why did he not tell me he was coming to my school?" Raven panicked.
Kori was just as panicked, "Are you sure he did not mention it, and it just slipped your mind?" Kori asked.
Raven stopped shaking her head "No, I'm sure of it. I wouldn't forget something like that." Raven Looked at Kori. "He saw Gar, he saw him sitting with me and then holding my wrist." she breathed heavily.
Kori stood up holding Raven by the shoulders "It's okay, calm down okay." Kori sat her friend on the bed. "He probably does not know who Gar is"
"You think so?" Raven looked up at Kori. Kori smiled then nodded to ease Raven's mind even if
she wasn't confident in her words herself.
Raven jumped by the sound of someone knocking on her dorm door. "Who is it?" she asked Kori.
Kori shrugged walking over to the door opening it, "mom?" Kori looked at the woman at the door.
Raven stood looking at the woman "You were here with him?" Raven asked.
Melissa walked in closing the door behind her "Yes" she said lightly "He wants to see you" she walked up to Raven hugging her. "How have you girls been?" she asked looking at the two.
"Fine," Kori smiled "but, now not so much," Kori admitted.
Raven looked up at the woman "He wants to see me right now?" she asked, "In the day?" That was a bad sign for her father to call her during the day.
Melissa reached grabbing Raven's hand "Yes, Tony took him home and is waiting in the car for you beside the auditorium building. Make sure no one sees you getting in the car"
--------------------------
"Gar, you want to go study with me and Richard?" Victor asked.
Gar shook his head "No, I'm good. I'm gonna go do something else" he turned a foot to walk away.
"Alright, your loss if you get a failing grade" Richard threw a hand up to wave goodbye.
Gar walked around the schoolyard thinking. Both Raven and Richard told him to figure it out slowly, he seemed to keep that in mind. "How was he supposed to do that?" was the confusing part.
He stopped when he noticed Raven standing talking to an older man by a car. He stepped back behind a wall so they could not see him. "Whos that," he asked himself. He watched them talk but could not hear what they were saying. "She keeps...." The man held the door open as Raven sat inside. Gar stepped out from behind the wall as the car drove away "....making me curious"
--------------------------
"Tony" Raven walked up to the man standing by the car.
"My little bird" he smiled
Raven hung her head "I'm ready to go"
Tony stepped forward placing a hand on her shoulder "everything will be okay, come on" he opened the door.
Raven looked up to him "It would be nice If I could believe that" she smiled getting in the car. The car pulled away.
The way to the house she once lived in always felt heavy. This time the sky was blue and the sun was out. The buildings didn't look like stars, and the streets were busy with people. They left the tall buildings that towered the sky and to the same brick wall up the driveway to a house.
"Thank you Tony" Raven opened the door walking out before he could say anything in return. She opened the doors walking into the same room she was in last. Her father was sitting in a chair watching her as she walked in. she took a seat across from him. "I'm here" she lowered her head.
Trenton placed his phone on the table between them sliding it across to her "tell me...why I see what I see in this video?"
Raven looked at the phone pressing the video to play "I-I can explain" she looked up at her father.
Trenton looked at her "I was quite surprised when I came to your school and saw this" he fumed with anger. "Do you know who this boy is?"
Raven nodded "Yes, sir"
Trenton smirked "Then you know he's a Logan, he sat with you today as well. He looked close to you."
"NO, that's not it" Raven looked up at her father "He likes to tease me that's all"
"Tease you?" Trenton shifted in his seat tugging at his tie. "I don't care, what I care about is why you seem to do nothing about it."
Raven felt inferior "I have, I've asked him to leave me alone multiple times"
Trenton narrowed his eyes "You know what I find interesting?" he stood pacing the room "Its peoples' instinct to be nosy." he slightly grinned looking at his daughter. "When people like this boy, a Logan, is seen hanging around people. People will naturally wonder who those people around him are." he leaned on the chair behind Raven "I wonder how many people have already started to wonder who you are because of this?" he whispered sending a chill down her spine.
"No one" Raven voice shook
Trenton took a seat back across from Raven "Something tells me otherwise" he leaned back "Pack your things, Tony will pick you up tomorrow."Raven stood "Why?" she tried to control her ragged breathing.
"That school has become too much of a problem, you'll stay here again until I figure out where to put you"
Raven fell to her seat "Put me?" she said softly as her eyes fogged over.
"Yes put you, I might send you overseas abroad somewhere," Trenton said without a second thought.
"Abroad?" Raven felt like fainting as she seemed to focus on nothing.
Trenton sighed "Yes," he looked at Raven "don't worry I'll make sure where ever you go you'll live comfortably with anything you want." he smirked.
Raven smiled then let out a breathed laugh "How...how could you just dump me anywhere you please like I was a piece of furniture in your house? I'm your daughter yet-"
"Yet you'll do as I say." Trenton cut in a harsh voice "you should be happy you have opportunities and privileges."
Raven snapped out of her thoughts "Don't make me leave school, please." she got down on her knees." "I'll do anything to make him leave me alone, I swear." Tears escaped her eyes. "I just want to graduate." she looked up at the man who seemed amused with her actions. "If you let me finish school, I swear....no, I promise I'll do anything you want.I'll even go abroad where ever you want to send me, I won't tell anyone where I am even Kori if that's what you want."
Trenton stood "Really?" he looked down at the girl
Raven nodded "Yes, I'll go somewhere where no one can ever find me if that's what you want."
Trenton let out a chilling sigh "How do I know I can Trust your word." he breathed
"You can if I break my promise... you can-" she thought
"Take Kori from you?" Trenton smiled.
Raven stood looking up at the man "What?"
"you dont think I can? I'll let you stay in school, in return after you graduate you'll go wherever I send you and if you don't keep that promise I'll Take Kori from you." Raven looked at the man who seemed to enjoy this. "What?" he asked "You don't want to? Is it that you don't feel confident you can leave Kori and everything behind once you graduate?"
Raven felt defeated "No,... I can" she looked up at her father "I'm confident" she straightened her self up.Trenton smiled "Of course you're my daughter after all. Then, I look forward to hoping that boy never speaks to you again" Raven left, tears streaming down her face. She looked up to the sky wishing it was dark so she could see a shooting star and make a wish. "I'm confident," she said to herself.
