— after lila and memmie's trip to the vintage fashion / thrift shop, they return to the "suburbs" where their shared apartment resides.
lila's goal for the thrift shop was to find a neon sign, anything neon really. memmie made fun of her for it, but she's loved how the lights look ever since she was a kid.
it was one of the few things, besides memmie, that gave her joy.
she had a light when she was younger, a gift from her sister. it colored her hair when she would lay her head under the light when time to rest at night.
one of the rules of New Age Land is that you are not allowed to express individuality. you are to remain colorless. the only defining thing you're allowed to have is your mark.
lila often thinks, "what about me is so special when even my mark is colorless?"
as she and memmie walk the path to their apartment, she glances down at memmie's mark, envious.
memmie's mark is as beautiful as her, lila thinks. the mark is Saturn, residing on memmie's upper arm.
the colors blend well together, creating some mixtures of blue, purple, and green.
memmie says it just looks like a bruise, but lila thinks otherwise.
"mem," lila starts.
memmie hums in response, occasionally kicking a rock in her path.
"what do you think would happen if i dyed my hair blue?"
memmie stops walking, and gives lila her classic, "lila. did you smoke something?" look.
"ila, you know i'm here for that idea.. but literally nowhere sells hair dye and even if they did, the second you step out with blue hair, you're gonna get jumped." memmie explains, resuming walking.
"then i just won't leave the house." lila smirks.
memmie chuckles, "you and i both know your cabin fever would eat you up inside, but go for it, i guess."
lila sighs and remains silent. memmie is right, lila can't stay in one place for too long.
lila gasps and stops walking, which causes the two girls intertwined hands to yank memmie back.
"what's going on inside that pretty head now?" memmie deadpans.
"the underground market."
memmie's eyes widen. the underground market is exactly what the name suggests. it's a marketplace underground that supplies drugs, weapons, and—
"hair dye! i bet they would have hair dye!" lila exclaims, a smile forming.
"oh no. ohhhhhh no no no. nope." memmie begins—
"c'mon! please! you know i might be right!" lila pleads.
"no, lila. you wouldn't last a day down there. you literally cry over everything. i bet if someone even just bumped into you down there you'd cry. i'm just being honest," memmie places her hand on lila's arm, "i love you, but, going down there would get you killed."
"ok. then you go down there!" lila pats memmie's back.
"i.." memmie begins.
lila's smile starts growing with anticipation.
"hate you." memmie finishes with a smirk.
lila sighs, "okay. fine. i guess i just have to suffer over the fact that i will never have—"
"fine! fine!" memmie caves.
here's the thing, memmie is a sucker for everyone's happiness, as she doesn't really feel her own.
especially if it comes down to lila's happiness.
"i'll get your stupid hair dye, if it makes you happy. but you're on your own when you eventually get caught by the government and thrown in jail. don't say i didn't warn you." memmie says.
lila brings memmie into a large hug, placing her head on the others shoulder. "have i told you that i love you so much? with all my heart?"
"cross your heart?" memmie mutters.
"cross my heart." lila replies.
"hope to die?"
"hope to die."
"hope to die and then come back to life, finishing me off too so i can go with you?" memmie continues.
lila smiles, "hope to die and then come back to life, finishing you off so you can come with me."
