“Alex, what the hell is this?”

“A dress,” He responds leaning out from the bathroom.

“Are you sure?” What he has laid out on my bed is a tiny piece of fabric that looks to be fit for a toddler. The red material has cuts and slits in places there shouldn't be and if I even attempted to put it on I'm sure my entire ass would hang out of the bottom.

“Mo, just put it on we have to go,” Alex appears from the bathroom with his shirt unbuttoned giving me a peek at his toned chest and defined torso. Without the belt his slacks hang off of his narrow hips, that he has placed his hands on. His bright emerald eyes glare at me, as he sees me still in my towel. “What's wrong with it?”

“Don't you think it's a little small?”

He rolls his eyes returning to the bathroom to presumably fix his hair. “I'm sorry, I forgot I was going out with a forty year old cat lady and not my twenty year old best friend. Please do forgive me. Don't You think you should live it up on your birthday?”

A lifetime ago I would have agreed with him, but in recent years I've had to take on the responsibilities of parenthood and I find it hard to do all the things I used to. “I do but… I don't Want to leave Cade alone,” I sigh.

“She's not a kid anymore I'm sure she'll be fine for a couple of hours.”

“But what if someone breaks into the house and she tries to call me but I can't hear my phone ring and she gets kidnapped or worse-”

“Will you please calm down!” He cuts in. “We live in one of the safest neighborhoods in town. And besides, I asked Mrs.Lambert to check in ber while we're out. Now knowing that you're little sister will be safe and sound will you please put the dress on so we can leave?”

“Well…”

“Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make that sound like a question. What I meant to say was, put the dress on, now!”

With a groan, I let the towel fall from my body and after a few minutes of skillful maneuvering I managed to get the fabric on my body. I look to myself in the mirror, and despite my earlier protests, the dress isn't that bad. It comes to about my knees with a slit that goes up the my thigh. The top was even more modest, with a corset style slit in the cleavage area, that I could easily tie up to hide my bust. I have to admit, no matter how much I’ve changed over these past couple of years, Alex still knows me better than anyone.
“Oh, are you guys on your way out now?” A voice asks from behind me. I turn to see my sister with her head poking into my room, her curly mess of hair sits atop her head in a bun with a few strands dangling in front of her hazel eyes, the ones she shares with our father. She raises an eyebrow at my silence, but Alex cuts in, as he always does, and responds.

“Yeah,” He fishes around in his pockets and produces his wallet. Reaching inside, he hands her two bills. “Here, order some pizza for dinner and you can keep the change. And don’t wait up for us, it’ll be a long night.”

“I hope so. I’m planning on having my own little get together.”

“Nobody’s allowed here without adult supervision, you know the rule Cade,” I reply.

“And by ‘nobody’ she means a maximum of four people.” He comes around to me and starts pushing me towards the door, grabbing my shoes in the process. “You know the rules, or should I say, you know my rules. No loud music, no smoking, if you drink don't get drunk, use a condom and if you do anything illegal,”

“Don't get caught,” They end in unison. Cadence leans against the door frame as we finally make it outside of the apartment. Alex allows me a second to cover my bare feet as he continues his ‘lecture’.

“Your sister is leaving her phone here but I’ll have mine,” At the revelation I try to sprint back inside to get the device but Alex already has he hand out to stop me. “Only call if you’re dead alright?”

“You got it chief,” She sends us off with a two fingered salute and Alex takes that as his cue to drag me down the corridor of the apartment complex.

“We won’t be back too late,” I call out.

“Yes we will,” Alex refutes.

“Bye Cade. Love you,” I continue.

“Love you too. And happy birthday again, enjoy yourself for once,” With that she closes, and hopefully locks, the door.

After a slow elevator ride and another minute of walking or so, we end up in Alex’s car, which I suggest is a bad idea because knowing Alex, he is going to get shitfaced tonight. And not only that, but I know he’s going to make me drink until I don’t remember my name.

“Will you stop worrying about everything, I already took care of that. Louis will be driving us home.”

“So you’re going to make your boyfriend deal with two drunk idiots today? If those aren’t relationship goals I don’t know what is,” I scoff.

In response, Alex rolls his eyes before removing a hand from the wheel and digs around in his backseat for something. After a short wait, he produces a silver flask and from the sounds of it, it’s completely full. He shoves it in my hand all while coming to a stop at a red light.

“Drink up birthday girl,” He looks over to me, seeing I haven't made a move. “What? I know you don’t like drinking in front of Cadence so your only choice is to pregame in the car now as I said before, drink up.”

I unscrew the cap to take a whiff of the liquid and a pungent smell attacks my nostrils. “Oh my god! What is that?”

“Absinthe.”

I turn to him, my eyes practically bulging out of my head. “Where the hell did you get absinthe from?”

“Does that really matter, just drink it.”

“Hell no, are you trying to kill me?”

“No, I trying to get you to have a good time. I know some things have changed in your life but you’re my best friend, and you used to be fun. Now you just sit around the house trying to be a ‘good’ example for your sister but you’re also wasting your life away. Forchristsake! You just turned twenty one, you can legally get drunk for the first time in your life, so why don’t you?”

“I-”

“How do you think Cadence would feel knowing that she’s holding you back from being yourself.”

“She’s not-”

“Then drink it. The Monica that I knew would have downed it by now.”

I pout at him bringing the cool metal of the flask to my lips. “You and your damn peer pressure.” I tilt my head back the liquid rushing down my throat. Even though I haven't done this in a while, it doesn't burn as much as I thought it would. As I set the container down, I see Alex out of the corner of my eye grinning like an idiot.

“What?” I ask.

“We are going to get so fucked up tonight,” He exclaims, stepping on the accelerator on the empty road. But referring to his previous statement, I really hope not.
