The game was fun, amazingly so. I think playing against my sister made it even better. Every time I pitched to her, or saw her run, my smile got bigger and my anger melted away. Now that all the games have finished and the day has melted away into the night I am running around trying to make sure everything is in order for the fireworks show. Once I have triple checked, and checked again that everything is ready and on schedule, I allow myself a moment of rest. And god, do I need it. I manage to make it to where Cade is sitting with her friends, she has at her side that is still wrapped in the foil, score. I'm starving, the last time I remember having a meal was this morning. I go to grab it but she takes it before I can.
"Go get your own." She says with a glare.
"Cade, I'm dying of starvation here."
"I'm sure you can take a few steps to the grill while you do that." And at that she falls back into a deep conversation with her friends.
I manage to pick myself up and walk over to the grill where Matteo is talking to Bill, another one of the dad's. At my arrival, Bill perks up and gives me a wide smile.
"What are you having?"
"Anything, I'm too hungry to think."
"One burger coming up." As Bill begins to prepare the food, Matteo comes up to me.
"So, I heard your sister does tutoring at the school."
"Yeah, she's trying to get community service hours for some scholarship."
"That's good. I was thinking about getting my son a tutor to help him with his math. How is she?"
"The best." I reply with a huge smile.
"Great. Here," He reaches into his back pocket and hands me his phone. "You should put your number in so we can arrange the details." I take the phone from him and give him mine so he can do the same.
We exchange phones again once the numbers are in and saved. Bill comes up to me with the foil wrapped sandwich and I happily take it, nodding a thank you to him. I take a huge bite from it, and sigh contently at the feeling of my stomach being filled. I look up to see Matteo smiling at me.
"I guess you were really hungry."
I gulp down my mouthful. "You have no idea." My phone buzzes in my back pocket and I grab it, only to see my alarm going off. My eyes widen with glee. "Oh, it's time."
I turn around and face the street. Suddenly a loud pop is heard and seconds later bright blue explodes into the sky. The show goes on with golds and reds painting the sky, and the audience is completely captivated by it.
"So I heard you organized all of this," Matteo comments. I look over to him and smile lightly.
"Yeah."
"You did an amazing job." He meets my gaze. "I really enjoyed myself today."
"I'm glad."
We turn back to watch the show of explosives and enjoy every moment. I look over to him and see the different colors lighting up his features. A small smile settles onto my face as I take the final bite of my burger.
Best. Night. Ever.
