"DEVIN!!! What the fuck were you thinking!? You could have gotten hurt!"
I turned around to a distraught Page. Her hair was a mess all over the place. It was probably supposed to be in a bun, but most of her hair was out, and the bun was loose and extremely lopsided. She had huge, dark bags under her teary eyes. Her face was wet, red, and I do believe I see a vein was popping out of her forehead.
"What would I have done if you had gotten hurt?" She continued.
She's right, she could have gotten fired. Not that that's what she's worried about. Or that there's gonna be a camp to work for after this but still.
It could be on her record or something, she'd have trouble finding a job. Workplaces wouldn't find her responsible.
"And who's the other girl you were with?"
"I don't know." I looked around and my eyes landed on her. She was petting Wolf, whose head was resting on her lap.
Page followed my gaze, "OH, MY GOD! Devin, you let a little girl go into a burning cabin?"
"No, I tried to stop her." Ignoring me, Page marched toward the girl.
"Oh, sweetheart, are you okay? What's your name? How old are you? What cabin are you from? Do you need anything? Everything is going to be okay. Please don't cry. It's okay. Everything is fine." Page was bawling now, clinging onto the little girl like a teddy bear.
The girl was struggling to get away from her. Otherwise, she was completely calm and collected.
Once she was free, I asked her the same questions Page did.
"My name is , I'm completely fine. Despite crazy lady's attempts to suffocate me. I'm from the Hawk cabin. I'm eleven. And I don't need anything, I'm fine. I'm not even crying," she stole a glance at Page who was curled up on the floor balling, cuddling up next to Wolf.
"Is she always like that?" She nodded her head at Page.
"Nah, she's just having a rough night, we all are." I looked back at the cabin.
Just head counselor Dean's voice came on. "All campers go to the parking lot, we are evacuating immediately. All campers go to the parking lot we are evacuating immediately."
His voice went on for an endless loop. We all helped each other down the hill onto the busses. Page had calmed down. No one from our cabin was missing or severely hurt. She did worry about my limping though ignoring my explanation that it was from earlier and I had run all over camp with it. There's no reason I can't walk to the bus on my own. She made me get on her back as she carried me to the busses.
Thank God, no one was missing or severely hurt. Only three kids were burnt badly and they were already at the hospital. Dean's husband drove them since we couldn't reach an ambulance.
The bus pulled out and drove away, while all the counselors were instructed to call the 911 until they got through to someone. So far they hadn't.
The farther out we got the more I thought. All my stuff is burning, the gay library is burning, the gift shop is burning, the lgbtq+ clothing is burning, the cafeteria is burning, the tree house where Quinn and I first said I love you is burning, the cabins that held so many memories are burning. Our memories are burning up. Our camp, this little light of hope that every LGBTQ member across the country had is now a literal ball of fire, melting away, along with our hope.
Whoever did this is going to pay.
