A/N - Here's a super long chapter for y'all!!! I really wanted to get this one out (thought about writing it all night lol).
ANYWAYS! WARNING - DYSPHORIA AND CRYING AND FEELS
Kathryn beamed as she skipped alongside her father, holding his hand tightly. She was just so excited! It was her first day of second grade, and she was at a whole new school, with a bunch of new people, and potential friends! She was good at making friends! They liked when she made goofy jokes like her dad!
"Here we are, kiddo," Dad smiled, looking down at her. He knelt and fixed her pigtails, which here honestly kind of annoying her, but Dad said she looked adorable, so she could deal with it. "You ready to make some new friends?"
"Yeah!"
"And learn new things?"
"YEAH!"
"That's my girl!"
"YEAH!!!!" Kathryn declared, hugging her father's arm before dashing into the classroom, ignoring the weird feeling she felt at his words. She was a girl, a cute, strong, funny girl! She shouldn't be bothered by that!

"Hey, wanna play dolls with us?" Kathryn looked over at the group of girls, then at the dolls in their arms. She bit her lip, shrugging.
"Okay, sure!"
She followed them to the corner with the playhouse, and she picked the doll with shorter, brown hair. She wondered if she'd look that pretty with short hair? The thought brought an uncomfortable feeling to her gut, but she once again ignored it, picking out some nice clothes to dress the doll in.
"What're you doing?" one of the girls wondered, frowning deeply. Kathryn blinked.
"Dressing her!" she replied happily.
"But those are the boy doll clothes!" Another girl pointed out, voice sounding annoyed. Kathryn tilted her head, staring at the doll.
"Yeah... they look big and comfy!" She frowned at the looks she was getting. "What?"
"Dolls are supposed to wear pretty dresses, dummy."
"...Why?"
"Because that's just how it is!" the girl said confidently. "Girls wear dresses, boys wear baggy shirts and whatever. Trust me, my momma makes dresses for pretty ladies all the time! Girls are super duper pretty in dresses!"
The other girls continued to chat with the apparent dress genius, and Kathryn bit her lip again, looking at the doll. Kat didn't like wearing dresses... it wasn't comfortable, and she felt bare. That's why she liked bright sweaters and shirts... did that mean she wasn't pretty? She didn't really... want to be pretty though. She liked being adorable.
"I don't really wanna play anymore." she mumbled, standing. None of the girls seemed to notice her walking away. Maybe she'd color instead.
Kathryn looked around the classroom, pausing when she spotted a boy in the corner of the room. He was alone, nose buried in a book that didn't look like the normal picture ones. Kathryn tilted her head. He was alone... she was alone... it must be destiny!
Kat skipped over to the boy, and plopped down with a cheery "Hi there!". The boy jumped, clearly shocked, and stared at Kathryn through his thick glasses. Kathryn smiled happily.
"Whatcha reading? That's a big book!" she wondered. The boy narrowed his eyes slightly, holding the book tight to his chest.
"...The dictionary..." he mumbled. Kathryn's eyes widened.
