Chapter 4 - Long Lost and Refound
Avery's POV
He knows. Oh shit, he knows.
How did he figure it out? I've hidden it perfectly without questions for years. How did this one boy come out of nowhere, know me for two days, and already know the part of my life that I keep a secret?
As soon as the teacher let us go, I practically ran out of the classroom, out the school doors, and halfway home. I ignored Zayn calling my name, not even turning back to look at him. I'd slowed down a couple houses down from his, and even didn't notice my tears until I reached up to press my hands to my cheeks in an attempt to warm them from the chill.
Up ahead, my driveway came into view. Instantly, my insides numbed with fear. My palms clammed up and started shaking. I fixed my posture and stood tall, walking up it. Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw something move. I stopped at the top of my driveway and looked around. Probably a squirrel.
I walked up the porch steps to my front door and was about to open it when it swung open. I froze, my previous composure dissolving.
My dad stood in the doorway, a sick grin plastered to his face.
"Where were you?" He asked, advancing slowly. I backed up, shaking my head.
"The tea-eacher gave me detent-ion," I stuttered, still backing away. The porch dropped to become stairs and I walked into mid-air, screaming and tumbling down to the path in the process. He came down the stairs and grabbed my arm, dragging me to my feet.
"Dentention, huh?" He dragged me up to the porch and into the house, slamming the door. He stopped in the hall branching off the front entrance and spun me to face him, promptly slapping me across the face. I shrieked, falling onto the carpet. "I thought you were going to bring your grades up," he sneered, kicking me in the stomach. I gasped, losing all my air, and clutched my stomach, trying to sit up. He kicked me over again and this time pressed his foot to my throat, preventing me from moving. "So you get detention?"
"Dad, please, it wasn't--" He pressed his foot down harder, breaking into my air supply. I pulled at it, gasping for oxygen and he laughed, throwing his head back.
"I don't care. Your mom said that if anything like this happened, I'd have to take care of you. Oh, I'm going to take care of you." His foot left my throat and I took a deep, relieved breath. But then he was pulling my hair up, forcing me to my feet. I shrieked, grabbing at his hands, but he just pulled me along to the stairs. "Let's go take care of you, shall we?" My eyes widened and I screamed louder as he walked up the stairs, pulling me by my hair behind him.
He walked across the landing and kicked open my bedroom door, forcing me into it by my hair. He let go and I collapsed to the ground on my stomach. He shut the door and came down on me before I could move. He straddled my legs and shoved his hands up my shirt. I screamed in protest, pushing at him with all there was in me. Just then the door slammed open and both our heads jerked towards the sound.
"What the he-- GET OFF OF HER!!!" Zayn stormed into the room and shoved my dad off of me, who in turn fell on his side. Zayn averted his eyes as I fixed my shirt and he slipped a hand behind my back, helping me up.
"Who the hell are you and why are you in my house?!" My dad screamed. Zayn just shot him a disgusted look and turned back to me.
"More importantly, what were you doing to your daughter?" Zayn asked calmly, speaking to him but searching my face. I looked away, ashamed at what he just saw. I glanced at my dad and he had his eyes narrowed at Zayn.
"I wasn't doing anything!" He huffed. To me he gave a look but I just ignored it, trembling. Zayn wrapped his arms around me and rocked me back and forth as my dad left the room.
