Chapter 4

The rest of the day went by normally. Art class was my favorite part of the day. I had a new project assigned to me. We had to go out and take several photos of the things we loved and put them together in a collage. It was due the next Monday. Now only to find things that I really loved.

Erick texted me and told me to meet him at my locker immediately after third period, he said it was important.

“Sheesh, what’s soooo important?” I asked as I opened up my locker to pull out my English book. Erick was leaned up against my locker twiddling with his thumbs. I nudged him, “Spit it out.”

He looked up at me nervously, “What if you like someone and you don’t know how to tell them.” His stance now swaying back and forth.

I gave him a knowing look, “Just tell her Erick, I can tell by the way she looks at you that she likes you back. Don’t you dare try to tell me it’s not Lydia that we are talking about because I caught the flirting earlier?” I said as I waved my finger in his face.  His cheeks now turning a crimson color.

“You really think so? I have been flirting with her for the past few months, but she never seemed to be interested. She was the only thing that kept me sane while I was away for the summer.” His voice sending chills up my spine. I wish I had a guy to say that to me.

“Erick if you really feel that way then tell her. I promise I will be so happy for you guys.” I leaned in and gave him a firm hug. “Now come on we need to get to class.” I intertwined my arms with his and drug him to English.

We both took our seats in the back of class and waited patiently for class to start. I looked around the class to find that there were a few seats empty. Yesterday they had all been filled; maybe they decided to skip on the second day.

Wyatt walked in with a book in his hand and a glass of water in the other. He had on a pair of reading glasses that he hadn’t worn wear yesterday. It made him look even sexier, if that were even possible. He took the glasses off and laid them on the book that he had placed on the desk. He had on a white polo shirt with tan khakis that were rolled up a bit at the bottom which made him look like he was right out of a magazine add.

“So how was the rest of your day everyone?” He asked looking around at the class. A few classmates answered with generic things like good, great, went home and watched tv. He smiled and asked, “so does anyone have anything they would like to add to the discussion?” He leaned towards the class.

A girl sitting in the first row asked, “Yea, how old are you?” Her voice seeping with sexual tension. She apparently was head over heels in love with him like the rest of us were.

He obviously felt uncomfortable with that question so he backed up and went to stand behind his desk, “I am twenty-three and yes before you ask I am old enough to be a teacher. I graduated when I was 16. I guess I am somewhat intelligent.” He started to laugh at his own joke.

All the girls in the room were mesmerized by his good looks. All I kept thinking was, Smart and sexy?

He cleared his throat and walked over to the bookcase next to his desk. He grabbed a book out and held it up for everyone to see. “Romeo and Juliet. I know, I know, you guys read this your freshman year but this is one of my favorite stories by Shakespeare and quite frankly I want hear it again.” He reached over and grabbed the rest of the books out, handing stacks in each row to be passed backwards.

“I want you to all go through the book and pick out your favorite lines and we will read them tomorrow in class and in front of everyone.” He smiled and sat back at his desk, he slide his glasses back on and picked back up in his book were he had left off.

I looked at Erick, who was engrossed in a text message. I looked down to find the most mangled book I had ever seen. Half of the pages were either gone or wrote in. There is no way I would be able to read this. I was going to have to ask for another book.

I stood up and slowly made my way to the front of the class, stepping over bags and feet. I stood over in front of his desk and cleared my throat to get his attention. He looked up slowly and slid his glasses back off.

A large smile spread across his face when he noticed who was standing in front of him. “Can I help you with something Claire?” My name floated off of his tongue sending shivers down my spine. I could smell his cologne form were I was standing; it was a bit musky but had a very sensual smell to it as well. “Claire?” His voice broke my concentration.

I held up my book and said, “Um, do you think there is another book that I can have.” He reached for the book and brushed my hand slightly. The touch was small but significant enough to send butterflies rushing through my belly. My heart beat wildly in my chest as if it were going to burst out.

I never used to act like this; I was always the good girl that focused on school and getting good grades. I never let boys distract me, but maybe that was the difference. Wyatt wasn’t a boy, he was a man. He wasn’t childish or rude. He didn’t care to pull my hair or say mean things to me. He was a man.

“Wow, I’m sorry Claire but this is a very bad copy.” He laid the torn and tattered copy on his desk and glanced over at the book shelve trying to see if there was another one. “I don’t see any more copies, but I guess I can let you borrow my teachers copy. Just promise me you won’t cheat.” His playful tone surprised me.

“Oh, no that’s ok. I can try to find a quote that’s not been ripped out.” I said as I reached for the old copy.  He grabbed my hand before I could manage to grasp it. What felt like a blot of electricity surged through our hands and I jumped back as if I had been burned.

He gave me a look that I didn’t recognize and shot a glance towards the students in hopes that they didn’t witness the scene. “No, take my book. I don’t need it right now anyways.” He said as he handed the book towards me. I had my hand cradled against my chest but I willingly took the book.

“Thanks, I will give it back when I’m done.” I grabbed the book and hurried back to my desk after taking one last look back at him.

Erick stared at me as I slid quietly into my seat, “What was all that about?” His tone coming off a bit concerned. He leaned over in his seat inspecting my hand. “Did he hurt you,” he asked as he rolled my hand over in his.

I yanked my hand back, “No, I’m fine. I guess it was just static electricity.” I shrugged the whole situation off.

Erick noticing my apparent annoyance let the subject drop. “So I texted Lydia and asked if she wanted to grab a slice after school.” He proudly showed me his phone. “She accepted.” He glanced at my eyes and said, “Oh, do you wanna come?”

Realizing that would put me as a third wheel I politely declined. “Nah, I think I am going to go to the park and snap some photos of wild life. I have a new project in art due and I wanna get a head start on it.” I said trying to divert the conversation to something lighter.

The rest of class I spend attempting to avoid Wyatt, the spark that happened between us was beyond weird. I didn’t know what was going on but I didn’t want to be a part of it.
