Chapter 5
“Are you sure you don’t wanna come,” asked Lydia from the window of her car. Erick and her were about to leave the parking lot to go on their little date. “It’s just pizza Claire.” She said as she grabbed my hand. Her big blue eyes trying to sway me to change my mind. I looked over at Erick, who was in the passenger seat, and seen that he wasn’t too thrilled that she was begging me to come.
“No, Lydia I’m fine. I really need to get to the park and take some photos.” I smiled sweetly to her and pulled away from her grasp. Erick looking at me with gratitude written all over his face. I waved goodbye and headed towards the park.
Our town was small. The only main features we really had was the lake and the small park that was near the edge of town. I loved the park. There were so many fresh flowers that bloomed in the summer there. The trails took you straight through the woods and gave you a very scenic route of our little county.
I decided to go on a trail that took me straight into the woods, my favorite route because at the end there was this little pond that was filled with small fish and tons of turtles. The wind outside was nice and a small breeze blew the scent of fresh flowers flowing past me. The trees were lush and filled with beautiful green leaves. I took my camera out of my bag and began to snap photos of all the trees that stood out to me. The only thing missing from my perfect moment was my music.
I reached in my bag and pulled out my mp3 play and put my ear buds in my ears. I scrolled through until I came across one of my favorite songs. I started to sing along with the music and snap photos every few steps.
The sun shone through on my face and I began to twirl around as I sung along to my song. I suddenly stopped when something ran past a tree off in the distance. The first thing that came to mind was the animal that killed the girl. My heart pounding and the sound of the music was loud in my ears. The animal had stopped behind a tree a few yards in front of me. I slowly walked past the line of the trial and walked into the dense grass. I rounded the large tree to see what animal was hiding. I silently took a few steps more and finally stood face to face with what I believed to be a vicious animal.
A small deer, standing awkwardly, took a break from eating a patch of grass and stared up at me. We both stood frozen in the moment. His ears twitching; listening to his surroundings. I slowly lifted my camera up to my face and took a quick snap. The flash from the camera must have startled him because he took off and disappeared into the bushes behind him. What an amazing moment, and I was lucky enough to have caught it on camera.
“Claire? Is that you?” A familiar voice brought my attention back to reality. I turned around to find Wyatt standing against a tree near the path. I gave him a puzzled look and started to walk near him.
“What are you doing here?” I took the ear buds out of my ears and stashed the mp3 player in my bag. Oh god, did he hear me singing earlier? Heat began to rise in my cheeks as the thought passed through my mind.
He started scratching his head as if to find the answer he was looking for. “I didn’t see you walking home so I asked your friend Erick where you were. I hope you don’t mind.” He smiled an awkward smile and pushed himself from off the tree. “He told me you went to the park and you were doing some type of class project.”
“Oh, well it’s no big deal, but why did you come here?” I had stopped a few feet from in front of him. He was acting really weird now. Why did I never listen to dad and bring the can of mace with me.
“Well I heard about the animal attack and I didn’t want you to get hurt. Ya know, cause your out in the woods.” He waved his hands in the air.
