The phone rang as we walked back inside the apartment after seeing Jenna to her car. I put it on speakerphone as I answered.
"You bitch. You turned him against me."
"Samantha?"
"You know who I am. You turned him against me."
"I don't understand, Samantha. Turned who against you?"
"You know who. Gabe. He was at my place today, looking at my things."
"You sound very upset. Tell me about it. How did you know Gabe was there?"
"I watched him from across the street. I could see him at my door and through my windows."
"Why didn't you just go say 'hi'?"
"I couldn't do that. They're looking for me. You turned the whole force against me. Everything was good before you came and now everything's falling apart. It's all your fault."
"What have I done to turn the force against you?"
"You've told them I'm going to kill you."
"Are you?"
"Yes. And I would've yesterday when I shot at you, but you moved at the last minute."
"If I told the force that you're trying to kill me and that's the truth, aren't you the one who turned the force against yourself?"
"Not trying. I will kill you. I missed yesterday, and I couldn't get into my apartment today, but I'll come for you soon. I'm going to kill you."
"What was in the apartment that you needed to kill me?"
"I wanted my knife."
"Did you get it after Gabe left?"
"I did, so I'm ready to kill you now. I'll stab you and watch you as you watch your own blood leak out of your body."
"You sound very angry. Why don't you come into my office tomorrow so we can talk about it?"
"I don't want to talk about it tomorrow. I want to talk about it now."
"Are you at your apartment now?"
"I am." Gabe motioned to keep her talking, then took his phone into the bedroom and softly shut the door. "And don't even think of sending Gabe over to pick me up. I won't be here for long after I get off the phone with you. By the way, nice place that you have. You certainly travel light. There won't be much for your family to inherit."
"I'm still getting established. What about you? Does your place have more furniture in it than mine?"
"I have more, but not as nice furniture as your couch was. It looked new. Was it?"
"A week old. You have no new furniture at your place?"
"No, I can't afford it. I don't earn the big bucks that being a doctor earns."
"Nor have the big student loans to pay back, I hope. I wouldn't wish them on anybody. I feel like I'm drowning in debt."
"I had a good job before you came along. I had a man who was interested in me, who had the potential of loving me back. Then you ruined it."
"What did I do to ruin it?"
"You just came along and acted like you didn't know any self-defence so he would train you. You acted innocent so he would protect you. We both know that isn't true. Those were ploys to get him to love you."
