I had just finished sending Brian's file to Addison with the request to file the report as is, and not to do any work on it until I had a chance to complete it, when there was a knock on the door. I looked up to see a big man, about 6'2", muscular and with the flat body that women would swoon over. I was no different. My mouth went dry as I took in his cropped head, his pale brown skin, and his warm brown eyes. His cream polo shirt strained at the shoulders and across his biceps, and was loose across what I knew instinctively was a six-pack. His black dress pants accentuated his tall, muscular legs. As my grandmother would say, he was a tall sip of iced tea on a hot summer's day. "Dr. Douglas?" he asked in a low, melodious voice.
"Yes, may I help you?" I asked, pleased that my voice sounded steady.
"I'm Detective Gabriel Taite. I've brought your file for you."
"Come on in." I got up from my desk and walked over to the couch and chair grouping. "I spoke with Brian earlier today, but I need him to come back for another go-around after I've had a chance to review the file. Thank you for bringing it to me", I said as I took the file from him.
"No problem. I wanted to meet you anyway. Many of my felons are streamed through you prior to standing trial."
"What unit do you work in?"
"Homicide. I used to work in Vice."
"Tough places to work."
"They can be. However, it's even tougher to see or hear of homicides or drug deals happening and not be able to do anything about them."
"That's true. What's your background? Did you come through the academy, or did you follow another route to becoming a police officer?"
"I actually was streamed through the academy but, because I'm a former SEAL and because I did well as an officer, I moved quickly through the ranks and made detective within a couple of years of starting with the force."
"Congratulations."
"Thank you. What about you?"
"I'm newly graduated from med school. This is my first job out of my residency."
"Congratulations to you as well."
"Thank you."
"Are you new to the Rockville area?"
"Yes. I come from a small town named Pebbleton, but did my residency in Boston. I didn't feel at home with the size of either place. I'm hoping Rockville will be the perfect size for me. What about you? Are you from Rockville?"
"My family all lives here, although I've lived all around the world during my years as a SEAL."
"Do you like it here?"
"Yes. Despite seeing all the bad that goes down through working in Homicide and Vice, I know that Rockville is a comparatively safe town. Better than many places in this world. I think you'll like it here. Do you know anyone in town?"
"Just Blake Fisher."
"Oh, him. Do you know him well?"
"Yes. We shared an apartment when we were in second-year university. Platonically, of course."
"Poor you", he said under his breath.
"Pardon me?"
"Nothing. Just talking to myself."
I started to laugh. "I admire your courage. Most people would be afraid to admit that to a psychiatrist."
He grinned, and I sucked in my breath. With a full-on smile, dimples winking in his cheeks, he was the best-looking man I had ever seen, and that included movie stars. "I always have been one to walk on the wild side", he said. I laughed as he stood. "Let me know if you have any questions on the file." He walked towards the door and passed Blake as he left the room. "Fisher", he said with a nod of his head.
