Jason sat up in his bed abruptly, heart pounding. The sheets and blanket were practically drenched in sweat. These reoccurring nightmares were starting to get bad. Really bad. And the weirdest part is, they all had the same ending. Hopefully it would pass soon.
Sun shone through the closed window. Snow sat atop roofs and treetops. Outside, kids were running around, playing games like tag and hide & seek. Well, it was good to know that school was out for the day. After the whole dream thing, he wouldn't have the energy to work properly.
All of this serenity definitely helped calm him down. Of course, it didn't remove all of his anxiety. But he knew exactly what would: breakfast. It was his lucky day, too; he could smell the scent of chocolate chips from his bedroom.
He climbed out of bed, pulling on the closest socks he could find before making his way to the kitchen. Before he knew it, he was seated at the kitchen island, his dad sitting next to him. Knowing that Marvin wasn't cooking was quite the relief.
"Morning, kiddo." Marvin ruffled the child's hair, taking a small sip from his black coffee. "Getting excited to meet your new sister? The agency said we could pick her up by two."
"Yeah! We won't have to share a room, right?" He had been fantasizing so much about his sibling that he barely remembered they hadn't met yet. Knowing he'd be older for once? That made him incredibly excited.
Before Marvin could respond, Whizzer placed three plates of chocolate chip pancakes on the island. "You two eat up, then talk about her. You'll need the energy."
They happily complied. Both of the men were horrid at cooking, anyone could confirm that. Yet, with all of the excitement, no one seemed to mind how some pieces were burnt, while others weren't cooked at all. Having them eat it all made Whizzer consider adopting a child every week.
Even with the nightmares, and the sadness, and everything else that's bad in the world, they at least had each other. It got tough sometimes, but at least Jason knew he had people to depend on. That's all he could ask for.
