"I'm back!" Josh's mom burst through the front door. Startled, I pushed Josh away. He smiled and walked back over to the couch. I fixed my hair and walked into the kitchen where Mrs. Lane was as if nothing happened, because nothing did happen. Right before our lips touched Mrs. Lane walked in. I dreaded yet hoped for the kiss to happen. "Hey Mrs. Lane!" I leaned against the kitchen counter and adjusted my glasses. "Ready to make some cookies?" She asked. I smiled wide, "Of course!" I grabbed the ingredients and followed her instructions. We put the cookies on the tray and set them in the oven. "Great! Now all we have to do is wait." Mrs. Lane took her gloves off and set them down. "Why don't you go watch Tv with Josh while I go across the street and retrieve something from my neighbor?" "Okay." Mrs. Lane left the house once again. I stalked on over to the living room and sat as far away from Josh as possible. He didn't even look my way. Come on! We almost kissed and your not even affected a little bit? Whatever, ill just pretend like it didn't affect me either. It didn't affect me at all... Time passed, I could smell.something burning. I jumped up and ran into the kitchen, opened the oven and grabbed the tray. Big mistake. I forgot to put on the gloves. The tray was really hot, I dropped it and let out a cry of pain. Josh ran into the kitchen and grabbed my hands and examined my fingers. They were red with blisters forming. I tanked my hand away, not letting him touch me."I'm fine. I don't need your help." Josh stood up and left. I honestly thought he took me seriously and wasn't going to help, until he walked back in with a First Aid kit. He got down on one knee and reached for my hand, once again I tried to pull away but his grip tightened. "Ow!" His gripped loosened just a bit. Enough for me to position it comfortably. He put some medicine and bandages around my fingers. When he was done he put everything back and stood up "Thanks..." I mumbled. I looked away from his eyes and picked up the burnt cookies. "Dammit! The cookies." I used my shirt and carried them all to the trash can and dumped them. He was so gentle when he put the medicine on. He didn't say anything, maybe he's angry? I heard him sit back down on the couch, I sneaked over to a wall and watched him. I looked at my hands and smiled. Mrs. Lane walked through the door, a bunch of containers in hand. "Oh my! Where are all the cookies?" "They kinds of got burnt." I confessed. I looked at the ground, embarrassed. "What happened to your fingers sweetheart?" She rushed over to my side and and grasped my hands. "It's fine! Josh, um, he helped me." I gave a sheepish smile and she smiled back. "Okay, since these were a failure and you got burnt, why don't we try again tomorrow afternoon?" She asked. No way in hell am I come back here. "Um sorry, I kind of have something to do tomorrow." I lied. "Alright. Some other time then." She said. "Tell your mom she can come over for dinner tonight!" "Yeah. Some other time, and i will!" I said goodbye and ran to my car. I cannot wait to get home. A safe place where I know my heart wont jump out of my throat.
