I wish I hadn't given them that homework. I'm regretting even seeing Emma or Mikey tomorrow. Now they can know all about my personal life. I'm a professor, for crying out loud! I should have handled it myself in a professional manner. Well, what's done is done. Maybe it could make them more empathetic towards me. But do I really want their pity? I don't want to be seen as the weak professor who can't get his shit together. I want to be seen as a business man. Business... I've always hated stuff like that. But to get anywhere nowadays, you have to sacrifice your wants for the overlord that is the economy. I'm sat on my couch thinking. Just pondering. When all of a sudden the speaker attached to the gate buzzes. I quickly approach the speaker and speak into it. "Who is there?!" I asked. I don't usually get visitors, so this is unusual for me.
"Hi, it's Emma-" Emma states before she is interrupted.
"And Mikey!" Adds in Mikey. I then hear a slapping noise and a wince from Mikey and I have to stifle a laugh.
"Anyway, we have those assignments." Emma uttered. I hesitated to let them in but eventually made way for them. I was hesitant because I wanted them to leave it until tomorrow so I could at least prepare something to say or thank them. They stumble through the gates and into my house. I can immediately see them gazing around like they were on a foreign planet. "Woah... this place is... nice." I could tell she wanted to say something else but to be nice she changed her words. I honestly just wanted them to give me their assignments and leave. But I wasn't gonna say that.
"So, do you have your assignments?" I asked them. I knew they did, I just wanted to make sure the conversation wasn't off topic so they didn't have to stay around for too long. They both nodded and each put a piece of paper on my coffee table.
"Professor? Could I make you something to eat? Judging by what I read I feel like you need some support." Mikey asked me. It was thoughtful of him. I never really thought of him to be thoughtful.
"Thank you for offering but I think you have better things to do than cook for a 60 year old professor." I chuckled a bit at that last part. Mikey shook his head at me.
"No no no, we insist!" Mikey went to open the cupboard. When he opened it all he saw was the back of the cupboard. "Where is all your food?" Mikey asked me. Emma proceeded to check the fridge. The fridge was also bare.
"What are you eating?" Emma asked me.
"I usually eat takeouts or I just don't eat." I decided to be honest. It would make things a lot easier. Emma grabbed Mikey and approached the door.
"We are going to buy you some groceries. We'll be back." Emma and Mikey left and shut the door behind them. I sighed and fell back on the couch. At least I had half an hour to myself before they would be back. I decided to pick up the assignments off of the coffee table and start reading them. Mikey's read:(that will be next chapter)
