Paul slammed the phone down and nearly tossed the book he was holding across the room but suddenly stopped, glancing down at it and feeling some comfort holding it. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. He bought it after seeing a copy in Natalie's house after helping her with the telescope. He assumed it was hers after their conversation about her favorite types of stories and decided to purchase a copy and read it. He didn't know what compelled him to do so, but he wanted to have something more to talk about, something that would impress her.
He sat down with the book flipping through it and glancing up at the phone and glaring at it. He just had a big fight with Jane. It seemed they did that a lot lately. He wondered why they were still together? Was it just easier to be together at a distance than breaking up? He ran his fingers through his hair before sitting back against the couch and opening the book to continue reading it. He could hear the girls at the gate shouting for him, something they often did and it was becoming more than annoying. He closed his eyes, letting his head loll back against the couch and placed the book over his face and groaned. How was he supposed to concentrate on anything with those girls making so much noise? He got up from the couch and moved to the window to peek over at the gate. He sighed, but then something, or better, someone caught his gaze. He saw Natalie walking with her bag over her shoulder and her eyes cast down at the ground. She seemed to be avoiding the girls at the gate and quickly rushed past them. They must have said something to her because she stopped and turned to face them. He opened the window and pressed his palms against the window ledge and poked his head out.
"Natalie!" He called, waving excitedly at her. His eyes narrowed in confusion, and a frown fell over his lips at the way she regarded him. Her honey glazed eyes shot up to stare at him dangerously, and her lips were pressed together in a thin line. She was glowering at him, and he wasn't sure why. He scratched the back of his head nervously and offered her an awkward smile.
She turned away from him, shoving her nose in the air and marched off as if he didn't matter. He watched her retreating form turn the corner with many questions popping into his head. He closed the window just as the girls began screaming for him. He closed the curtains as well and moved to grab the book of the couch and shoved it in his back pocket before heading out the door, getting into his car and avoiding the girls as he headed out and down the road. He could see Natalie walking in the distance, and he pressed on the gas, catching up to her quickly.
"Natalie, are you all right?" He asked her, slowing down next to her but she refused to look at him.
He sighed, stopping the car and quickly getting out to jog over to her. He grabbed her wrist lightly and turned her around to face him, "Why are you ignoring me?" He asked, his voice coming off more demanding than he intended.
She narrowed her eyes at him and yanked her arm away from him, "Because you can't just go around flirting with people when you have a girlfriend, Paul McCartney!" She scolded him, her fists balling up angrily as she glared at him. She stepped forward, getting dangerously close to him, nearly pressing her nose against his, "Who the hell do you think you are? I don't care how famous you are; you're not excused from bad behavior. You have to suffer the consequences of your actions just as much as the next person."
Paul didn't know what to say. She was calling him out on his actions and he wasn't sure he knew how to handle it. A part of him wanted to lash out at her and tell she's crazy and that they were just friends, yet he knew the way he acted on the roof and how he was more than just friendly with her.
"See my point?" She laughed, stepping back, "You don't even have a response, because you can't believe I'm talking to you like this. But I'm sorry, there is a reason people like you become so unhappy in the end. You sing about love, but I don't think you even know what it is." She spat angrily before turning on her heel and walking away from him.
Paul's mouth fell open as he processed her words. They were harsh, and it felt like she punched him right in the gut. He swallowed the giant lump in his throat before stomping after her, "You don't even know me, who are you to assume I don't know what love is?" He challenged her.
She swung around, her hair whipping behind her as she gritted her teeth at him, "You love the idea of love, but you have no idea what it actually means to love another person do you? When you love someone, you want what's best for them, you make sacrifices for them, and you're willing to lay down your own life for them because that's what love is. It's not going around flirting shamelessly with other women because you can't keep it in your pants. I can't believe you even made me a part of that. I feel disgusted just thinking about the things you said to me, and the way you touched me knowing you had a girlfriend the entire time."
Paul felt his ire rise and his jaw clenched, "How self-righteous are you, Natalie? You're just going to stand there like a saint and judge me when you don't even know me or anything about my life or my relationship with my girlfriend?"
"Oh for Christ's sake, Paul. That's still not an excuse. You'll never get it, will you? You think you're above the rules, that you can do whatever you want. But you can't. I honestly wish I never met you."
He froze, his eyes saddening and his heart twisting in his chest, "Well, if you didn't, then I'd be dead right now. But I'm glad you feel that way." He said, turning to walk back to his car.
"Paul, that's not what I meant!" She said, running after him but it was too late, he left, turning the corner faster than what was deemed safe. She felt the tears fall and she shook her head. She let her anger get the best of her. She had no right to judge or accuse him that way yet she did. She wiped the tears away and glanced at the ground to see a folded book on the ground. She knelt down to pick it up, reading the title, her sobs increasing. She held the book close to her and headed home. She needed to fix this, but she didn't know where to begin.
