CHAPTER 3

The question buzzed around in my mind, and I nearly collasped in sorrow. This wasn't Wonderland. The smell of festering flesh clogged up my nostrils, and I nearly screamed.

"No, no no no this can't be happening...." I said to myself, great, now I was talking to myself. At least my sanity was saved, other wise I would have run around screaming. No. I had to keep strong, at least for a while. But I never could break down, or back down for that matter. No. I would stay standing, even if I lost my life here.

"Gracie! The child of the Alice!" Grinned the Cheshire Cat. He was purple. His grin looked like one of a pedofile. I nodded. And took a step backwards. I was still small from the vial of... whatever was in it. I looked at the Cheshire Cat, and nearly fell backwards. His face was right next to mine, and I nearly fainted and screamed. I ran right through his face into the horrors ahead of me. The faced flower's faces had been cut off, and it tugged at my heart.

"Gracie." The Cheshire Cat appeared in front of me with his pedophile smile. "Where are you going?"

"Away... I need to find the... Mad Hatter. Or, the, White Queen."

"I don't recommend the Mad Hatter."

"Why?"

"He's mad."

"Mad as in angry?"

"Mad as in psycho."

I was confused. Mother said that the Mad Hatter was always crazy. But, psycho? That was new.

"I'm the only sane-ish living thing left in Wonderland since your mother left." Cheshire stated.

"Ish?" I said.

"I can turn off and on like a switch, Gracie."

"Take me somewhere. Away from here. Not anywhere that freaking rabbit. What happened to him anyway?"

"Bandersnatch fight,"

"I thought that Mother tamed the Bandersnatch?"

"You thought wrong."

Why was the Cheshire Cat helping me? My gut told me to ditch him, but some rational part of my brain told me that he would just find me again.

He's always going to be following you.

I sighed. I obviously wasn't going to able to ditch him anytime soon.

"Follow me, just trust me, daughter of Alice."

I nodded, and he disappeared.

"Come on!" I mumbled, when he appeared further up the path.

"Coming?" He taunted.

I was sick of him already.

He took me too the tea party my mother had described to me. it was a wreck. Obviously, the Mad Hatter had gone mad.

"The Mad Hatter cuts off peoples heads with axes now, Gracie. He is well and truely insane."

I frowned. What had driven Wonderland to madness? My mother leaving? The Red Queen? It wasn't anything I imagined.

"Hide, young Gracie!" Cheshire hollered. I nearly yelled at him for calling me young, but, he was scared. I hid behind the fallen tree log, and held my breath.

The Mad Hatter walked past, carrying an axe with him. Blood dripped off the end of it. Crimson, fresh. He had just killed somebody. I wrinkled my nose in disgust. Who had he killed? The falling apart rabbit? The White Queen? Dormouse?

A citizen of Wonderland walked past. As soon as she saw the Hatter, her mouth gaped in fear. I had that same feeling of fear; once. When I was falling down that bloody rabbit hole.

The Hatter smiled as if to say, 'I'm not going to hurt you, girlie.' But she knew what he had done. She started running. She was a fast runner, too. But so was the Hatter. He swung the axe, and the girl's headless body fell to the ground. The crimson blood stained the colourless grass. The Hatter picked up he head and mumbled something to it. Then he merely tossed it aside, and walked forward, the blood dripping from his axe making a blood drop path.

I hadn't noticed that I had pulled a hand to my mouth to cover it. I dropped it down, and looked at the ground.

"Quite alright?"

I yelped and jumped. "Holy crab, Cheshire! You scared me to death! I thought you were the Hatter!"

He put a paw to my mouth. "Shhh, if he hears you he will come back." I nodded and he dropped the paw from my mouth. He started playing with his tail.

"So, what now?" I whispered.

"Now, we follow the Hatter." My mouth dropped to make an 'O' shaped. Cheshire just started chuckling.

"Even I need amusement sometimes." He said still grinning. My face turned into a scowl. "Oh, come on Gracie, what did you expect of Wonderland? Puppies and ponies? Magical unicorns? Wonderland has changed since your mother left to New Zealand. When she came back, everything had gone wrong. The only hope we had was, you. But everyone went mad in those 13 years we waited. You came to America when you were 2. Every year that ticked by was like an insane bomb. 93% of Wonderland civilians and creatures went insane. Now, I am halfly insane. So, if I tell you to run, you run." I nodded at his speech. Even though he wasn't the most sane person I knew, I would still give him a chance.

"Let's go." I said. The smell of festering flesh was entering my nose. These people decayed fast. I crinkled my nose, trying to keep out the smell.

Cheshire nodded, and took me past the body, the same way the Hatter went.

"Why are we going this way?" I asked.

He looked at me, dead serious, no joking on his face, and said "We're following the Hatter, Gracie."
