(italics mean flashback)
ROSE HARGREEVES sat alone on her single creaky bed in her lonely room of thirty years. this was her usual spot, never straying away from her father's house, never disobeying his orders. rose's father, sir reginald hargreeves, had adopted her and seven other babies when they were all born on the same day, at the same hour. this was unusual as none of the women had been pregnant prior to giving birth. she was special. her siblings were too, all apart from her sister vanya. she looks out the window at the gloomy sky, grey clouds shielding the warmth of the sun, trying to forget her painful childhood of fighting crime and being tortured under her father's care.
the young girl picks up a black wooden photo frame, placed on her dusty bedside table, which contained a photo of seven children, a rare smile upon each of their faces, all dressed in uniform with black masks over their eyes. ben, a small asian boy with a small grin on his face was looking upwards towards klaus, a happy child with a smile plastered over his whole face. diego, a tanned boy was behind these two with a large smile on his face too, watching over the two boys. next to the three were allison and luther, looking at each other in the eyes with two large grins on their face. finally, at the very right of the picture was five and rose. rose, with a smile which could brighten a nation, was in the arms of the boy, bridal style, holding a single red rose. five was looking at rose with happiness in his eyes and a large toothy smile to show. a soft smile appears on the pink lips of rose, as she takes in the faces of her brothers and sisters, but that of especially, the face of her beloved five lifting her glum mood.
five hargreeves. rose's one and only, her favourite, her soulmate, had tragically gone missing seventeen years ago. the disappearance had taken a heavy toll on the young girl's soul. she was broken, beyond broken. unable to eat, unable to sleep, even unable to age or use her powers. this strange curiosity was burnt into rose's mind, the answer as to why had complexed her for several years. as she watched her siblings go on missions and grow up, she stayed in her room, hoping to wake up the next day back to her usual self. she is now a thirty-year-old in a pubescent fourteen-year-old's body, wishing for a better way.
a soft knock in the girl's bedroom door woke her from her deep thoughts as she turned around, wiping a single tear that had collected on her cheek, to be met with the monkey that had watched her grow up from a baby. "hello dear pogo, is there anything wrong?" she questions as a small solemn grin gathers on the monkey's face as he searches for the right words to say. "pogo?" she questions once more "miss rose, i'm with deep regret to inform you that your father, sir reginald hargreeves, passed away last night in his slumber" the words enter her mind, slowly but surely, as she sits in shock, unaware of how to feel. not feeling terrible grief nor mourning. just shock. "miss ro-" "thank you pogo is that all?" rose interrupts, as the monkey nods his head and slowly walks down the cold halls of the umbrella academy, leaving rose in peace.
sir reginald hargreeves was never a good man. he stole eight children from their mothers. he used his own adopted children for their powers against their will. he put them through hell and back for his own selfish ways. and now he's dead. as rose hugs her knees she thinks a thousand thoughts a minute 'i'm not sad. i don't feel regret or anguish. only nothing. like always.' she lays down in her creaky bed, burrowing herself in the sheets and starts to drift away to sleep as end to a day she will never forget.
"five stop it!" rose laughs as she turns around in every which way trying to find the boy teleporting himself around her bedroom in attempts to scare her. "five i swear to god" she says, "boo" the boy appears behind her and whispers in her ear, causing her to jump. "five i really, really hate you" she says whilst trying to catch her breath "shut up rosie you know you love me" he says whilst laughing, sitting down on her bed. he watches as the girl snaps her fingers, a crown of daisies wrap around his head with a look of disapproval growing on his face "aw, such a cute girl" rose mocks, pinching his cheeks with a grin "not funny" he says, taking the daisy chain off his head and placing it on the girls. "i forgot to tell you that you were really good today, that whole choking thing, beautiful work" she expresses, sitting next to the boy on her bed "thanks but you were the real hero, the poisonous mushrooms, was a nice touch" he says as a slight blush appears on rose's cheeks "well thank you m'lady" the girl mocks once more. a loud sound comes from the doorway as their father opens the door angrily. "number eight and number five, what do you think you are doing, it is bedtime, get to your bedroom at once you" he shouts angrily at the pair whilst pointing at five. five gives the girl a quick smile whilst teleporting out of the room. "and get that stupid thing off of your head, if you waste all your energy to do silly things like this how do you expect to have any energy to do things of great importance" he shouts "i'm sorry father i won't do it again" the now saddened girl says as she takes off the crown, watching it quickly turn brown and dissolve into dust on her bedside table as her father leaves and slams the door, causing her to jump.
the girl quickly sits up in her bed looking over at the bedside table the daisy chain was once on "oh five, please come back" she whispers to herself, reminiscing the days when she was once happier.
