Chapter 8: The Monster

It worked. The kiss lasted just long enough for the footsteps to pass. They pulled apart. Josie has stopped crying. Both of their breaths were calm now. Penelope pulled Josie into a hug and they stood there in silence for about 5 minutes. Josie finally spoke up.

"We have to go. The specialists are probably almost here now. We have to try to get out of the school or they may find us and think we are the monster."

"Okay. I'll follow your lead."

Josie slowly opened the door and peaked her head out. There was nothing, no one. It was complete silence. Josie took a few steps out of the closet, Josie at her tail. They stayed close to the wall,taking small steps. At the end of each hallway they would pause. Penelope would sneak a look around the corner and tell Josie it was fine to keep going. Josie was heading for the library. At the far end of the library was an emergency exit. They were still a few halls down from the library when they heard something.

It wasn't a scream, no. It was more like? Like? A screech? Neither Josie or Penelope could tell from which direction it came so they decided to keep heading towards the library but this time at a quicker pace. They turned a corner without checking this time and oh boy was that a mistake.

Both girls froze in there track. The monster stood about 10 feet away. He was tall. He wore a cowboy hat and boots. His hand was on his belt. He held a revolver. There was something different about him though. His skin was flaked, eyes red. His left knee stuck out sideways but he still didn't seem like he was in pain. Josie was clinched to Penelope's arm. Penelope was slowly but surely pushing Josie behind her.

"Zombie right?" She muttered in Josie's ear

"Yes very old zombie!" She whispered back through clinched teeth.

Within a moment he raised his revolver. Penelope pushed Josie back and ran. They ran, Josie in front and Penelope behind. Penelope's hands were on Josie's back, helping moved her along. They heard gunshots from behind. He was close. They made a turn and suddenly stopped. It was a dead end. They turned to face the monster. His face was blank.

"We don't have an artifact! Leave us alone!" Josie screamed.

The monster just chuckled slowly and raised his revolver again but this time pointed it toward Josie.

"NO!" Yelled Penelope, as the monster put his fingers on the triggered.

Penelope leapt from the ground straight in front of Josie. There was a bang. Josie flinched and closed her eyes. Tears streaming down her face once again. She lifted her fingers and spoke swiftly

"Elsi repujuta"

Two bodies hit the floor. First Penelope and then a second later, the monster's.

Josie opened her eyes. Once she saw Penelope's body in front of her. She immediately dropped to her knees.

"PENELOPE!" She yelled tears still streaming. There were tears in Penelope's eyes too. Josie grabbed the older witch and put her in her lap. The bullet had hit her below her chest. She was breathing heavily. Blood was pouring everywhere. Josie slipped off her sweatshirt and pushed it on the wound.

"Please hold on Penelope please! HELP! SOMEONE HELP!" She screamed.

Penelope's eyes were fixed on her.

"J-Josie." Josie's eyes went back on her.

"Hey just stay still! please just stay still!"

"I'm n-not going an-anywhere." She chuckled through clenched teeth. Josie was rubbing her hands through Penelope's hair.

"You better not!" She sobbed.

They heard footsteps from the adjacent hallway.

"HELP!" She screamed again.

4 men dressed in all black turned around the corner. Two surrounded the dead body of the monster and the other two ran to help Penelope off the ground. Josie was reluctant to let go but their force was too strong.

Lizzie was the first one out of the door. Someone had been shot. That's all they heard. She ran until she found two guys carrying someone. It was Penelope. Behind them lingered a sobbing Josie. Lizzie ran to her and hugged her. Josie melted in her arms.

"He shot at me. She- she jumped in front of me." She sobbed.

"It'll all be fine. She'll be fine." Lizzie responded with a straight voice. She actually had no idea if that was true.

Penelope's eyes fluttered open. She was at the hospital. She tilted her head to the side. Beside her, at the edge of the bed, rested a sleeping Josie. As much as it hurt, she lifted her arm and started combing through Josie's hair. She's okay. She's okay. Josie's head shot up. Her eyes widened and a bright smile grew on her face.

"Penelope?" She suggested.

"Yes?"

"YOURE SO STUPID! WHY WOULD YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT!" She said as she swatted Penelope's arm. Penelope chuckled. Josie lifted her head to rest her forehead in Penelope's. They stayed like that for a few minutes before Penelope noticed that Josie was crying. She pulled away.

"What's wrong?"

"You took a bullet for me. You could've died Penelope! Why would you do that?"

Penelope grabbed her hand. She looked down at the hand and looked back up.

"Josette Saltzman. I would take a thousand bullets for you."

Woah woah woah what a chapter. I wrote this pretty quick so I'm sorry for errors. Just saying English is by far my worst subject. Also I'll probably be updating a bit more this week since I'm off school. High school is a bitchhhhhh. You know what to do, give me some suggestions. Comment comment comment!
