Chapter 48

Swirling the alcohol around my glass I released a unladylike like sound from my mouth as my mother finished her speech about how she wishes the couple a happy and long marriage. The applause died down as my mother took her seat beside Stacy who wiped the newfound tears from her cheeks as if she were actually touched by the load of crap my mother just spewed. I expected this cheesy crap but having to get through it was a different story that proved to be more difficult than I originally predicted, even drunk.

"This is nauseating." Tess mumbled under her breath

"Tell me about it." Aaron added with a exasperated sigh

Biting my lip I stifled a fit of laughter as I watched Tess glance down at her wristwatch yet again as Aaron fiddled with the short golden trimmings of the tablecloth. Both my best friends hated this miserable excuse of a wedding as much as I did and weren't trying to hide their obvious disinterest not that I minded. Actually, it was quite refreshing to sit next to two people who aren't fake and care for me unlike three fourth of this room.

"I really love you guys, you know that?" I admitted with a giggle

Tess shook her head as my father stood up with his award winning smile and his champagne glass raised in the air "I would like to take this time to thank you on behalf of the couple for joining us on this joyous day." he said into the microphone

Applause erupted through the large hall much to my frustration. Siting up I glanced around the table I shared with my parents and the newly wed couple, those plastic smiles were in place as the paid photographers snapped the pictures of this oh so 'joyous' moment as the video camera rolled at each end of the room capturing the entire night. It was amusing how this mediocre night would be recorded. What is Stacy going to do with this tape anyway? Watch it? Toss it? Or keep it for show?

Did this wedding even count as a wedding?

"Thank you all." my father repeated as he raised his glass in the air "I hope to see you all again at Khloe's wedding." he added with wink

The room broke into a soft wave of laughter as my father retook his seat. Clenching my jaw I turned towards my father who tilted his glass in my direction much to my annoyance. I wasn't too sure if he deliberately meant it as a joke or the crowd of snobby jerks took it as one but either way I didn't like the hundreds of eyes on me right now. Heat flooded my cheeks but not of embarrassment but of anger as I yet again stood by and took their laughter.

"Ignore them babe." Tess instructed

It was easier said than done and I knew she understood that when she threw her arm around my shoulders so I was leaning slightly against her swollen belly. Digging my nails into my palm I watched my mother lean toward my father, mouth stretched into a perfect smile that concealed any true feelings but the way her brows furrowed as she secretly spoke to my father wasn't. Her eyes flared angrily but my father could careless as he rolled his eyes and placed a hand on her forearm, my mother jerked at the touch and her smile dropped as she stared at the hand on her arm. The look of shock on her face wasn't what I expected as my father spoke to her while rubbing his fingers across her skin, what I expected was for the mother I knew at these sort of parties not the one across the table who stared dumbfound at my father's hand.

Did my mother really still harbor feelings for that selfish prick? After everything he's done to her and the countless times he has hurt her she still reacts like a schoolgirl when he touches her?

I shook my head in disappointment as my mother nodded to whatever my father said. I pitied my mother at the moment, pitied her because she was still under his thumb after all these years. Pitied her because she was still in love with an asshole like him. This was how he slipped out of each cheating scandal with her. He simply puts a bunch of bullshit words together and touches her and she is putty in his hand.
