(This is inspired by the song "Maybe" from the movie "Annie". The song is directly from said movie and doesn't belong to me in the slightest.)

The children rose from where they slept, curled in a warm pile in an alleyway. Where they slept wasn't safe. Rats could scurry in and give them rabies, which is how they lost one of their companions a long time ago. Some weirdo could pick them up in the dead of night, which has yet to happen, and they could probably freeze to death rather easily in harsh weather. But they don't have too much of a choice. They had each other, anyway.

Lindsey was the "leader" of the group, since she was the oldest. At a whopping ten years old. She can fight like any guy her age and older, another reason why the others trust her with leading. Her hair was long and knotted, pitch black with chocolate skin and black eyes to match. She came off as rough and nasty at first, and she could be if she had to, but she had the softest heart of all of them. These other kids are her only family now and she shows it.

Next is Levi, who is the same age as Lindsey, only a month older. He's more like the body guard. He has dark hair with brown eyes and buttery skin. He's taller than Lindsey, but she's beaten him up a few times when he questioned if she really knew her stuff or not. He's there to mainly keep sure that no one gets left behind while they're moving and no guards come after them. Even if guards do show up, he makes sure everyone sticks together and finds quickest ways out and how to hide. He doesn't talk much, but when he does, it's mainly to the little kids who need a ride on his shoulders because their little legs are getting tired too quickly.

Then Mikey. He was a funny kid. He was eight years old, but he looks younger. He has big brown eyes but the lightest blonde hair you ever saw. He's all tan, lighter than Lindsey but darker than Levi. He's the height of about Lindsey and Levi's shoulders. He keeps the group's spirits up. He jokes and makes silly faces. He's also the fastest runner ever. He can zip around the city and back if he wanted to, but he stays with the group because "they're more fun than the gloomy towns".

Than Sara. She's one of the smallest, even if she's only seven years old. She says it's because she never had a lot to eat, so her bones couldn't get strong enough to grow big. She's the fiercest little thing, like an angry puppy. She can hold an argument with Lindsey that even big ole Levi would back out of. She tells how smart she is even if she's small, but the kids haven't been able to see that just yet. Sara has light brown hair and eyes so funny looking. She says they're blue, but they look purple. She's paler than pale, but she says that's because of no food as well.

Then Mateo and Milo. They are twins, identical, five years old. They're both kinda dark, but lighter than Lindsey and darker than Mikey. They both had really fluffy and curly black hair with big black eyes. They're always fighting with each other, but they scream and cry if you try to separate them. It's funny, but annoying.

Lastly, there's little Zanay. She has similar skin to the twins, but different still. Her hair is dark brown, but looks mixtures of red and golden when the sun hits it. Her eyes are darker than dark, but not scary at all. Her hair's always in a braid that Lindsey would put in for her. She's four, and smaller than Sara even. She can't move too well on her own, so Lindsey carries her on her back everywhere. She's quiet as a mouse and barely speaks. She usually makes noises to tell what she wants. When she does speak, it's only to Lindsey and so soft you can't hear anything at all.

They were on the move again. They hop from town to town, city to city, looking for food and new places to sleep for the night and no guards to snatch them up and split them apart. But every town and city has those.

The kids dragged their feet as usual. Even Mikey was quiet, which was strange for him. Lindsey kept on going strong, Zanay with her arms wrapped tightly around her next, holding on tight. She listened to the silence behind her, which was strange and bothersome, even if it should be the opposite for most people. It was bothering her, because the kids behind her were never quiet. The twins were always fighting over something, like who stepped on her and who's stick was who's. Mikey was always cracking jokes to Sara, who Levi pulled away to stop her from socking him.
