Chapter 8: The Face of My Brother’s Enemy
My eyes snap open. Something is wrong. Something’s off. I try to move. But something is restraining me. I look to my waist. A pair of arms is wrapped around it tightly. I turn my head to whoever is spooning me. I silently gasp, for the sleeping face is none other than the face of my brother’s enemy and my best friend, Draco Malfoy. Ugh, now is not the time to be thinking about this. I just want to go back to sleep. I glance up at the wall to look for the clock, but it’s not there. WHERE’S THE CLOCK?!?! I realize I’m not in the Gryffindor common room. I’m in the Slytherin common room. Bloody h*ll!
I go to unlock Draco’s arms from around me, when I notice my ripped robe barely hanging on me. What happened in the potions classroom comes flooding back, and I muffle back a sob. I begin to tremble as I relive those cursed moments. I must have woken Draco with all my trembling because his grasp at my waist tightens, and he whispers my name. I finally begin to cry. I can’t help it anymore. I keep seeing it over and over in my head. Feeling everything over and over. And over. And over. And over again. It won’t stop. Draco cups my face gently and soothingly, but it doesn’t comfort me. It frightens me. I know he means me no harm, but still it scares me. I look into his eyes. I know I must look terrified with my eyes large and tears still spilling out. He slowly removes his hand. “Hanna, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it that way. You know that.”
I keep staring at him, trying to force myself to trust him. He saved me. “Thank you.” I whisper.
“Why are you thanking me?” he asks.
“You- you saved me.” I choke out through my sobs.
“Oh, Hanna. I will always save you.” He stares dead into my eyes. I turn myself around and hold onto him like a lifeline. His own grasp tightens around me.
“Draco.” I whisper.
“Yes?” he whispers back.
“When will the memories go away?” I ask, scared of the answer.
“I don’t know.” He says sadly.
“I need to get to class. People will start asking where we are at.”
“Your potions class would end in 5 minutes. Stand up.” I’ve stopped crying and do as I’m told. “Repairo!” My robe is instantly mended.
“Thank you. Will you walk me to the Great Hall? I don’t feel safe. Please?” I bat my eyelashes over my red swollen eyes.
“Of course.” He smiles at me. “I’m glad you are getting back to your normal self.”
We pick up our books and head out of the common room. We wind the corner just as the last of the potions class is going up the stairs.
“Miss Potter, may I speak with you?” An icy voice that sends unwanted shivers through my entire body asks.
“I am coming with her, and you know exactly why, professor.” Draco says with venom.
“Of course, Mr. Malfoy.” Professor Snape responds, and with that, he leads us into the classroom.
“I want to apologize for my actions earlier today. The Weasley boys slipped something into my pumpkin juice this morning, and I was acting out of character. I honestly thought you were Lily Evans, and I thought I was a student again. I will take full consequences for my actions, if you wish to report it to Professor Dumbledore.”
“I’m not going to report it.” I say in a small voice. Draco places a firm grip on my arm.
“Hanna… I…” he begins, but I cut him off.
“I’m not going to report it.” I say in a normal tone. “May I have the material I missed in class, so I may be on my way?”
“Here.” Professor Snape hands me a few papers of notes and the homework assignment.
“What shall I use as my excuse for not being in class, when people ask me?” I ask him.
“You were on a personal errand for me. That is the excuse I gave to the class.” He responds.
“Goodbye, professor.” Draco interrupts and drags me out of the classroom.
“Draco?” He is pulling me rather roughly. I jerk my arm away and I stop.
“Hanna.” He goes to grab my arm again. “Hanna, c’mon.”
“No. I will not be dragged through the corridors.” I say sternly. “I have had a horrible day, and you will not drag me and tell me what to do.” I say. I can feel the tears burning at my eyes, begging to fall. I won’t let them. “Now, you are going to tell me right now why you are dragging me.”
He stares at me. I see hurt and pain in his eyes. He’s scared. He opens his mouth and closes it again.
“Draco?” I ask in a small voice. I’ve never seen this side of him.
“You should report him.” He says quietly.
“Why?” He instantly becomes angry.
“WHY?!? WHY?!? Because he could have raped you!” He yells. I walk toward him. My first instinct is to wrap my arms around him, but I hesitate. His anger scares me. I whimper. “SEE! You’re scared of me! He did this to you!” He’s scaring me even more. I begin to slowly back away.
“Hanna, it’s okay. I’m sorry. I’m not going to hurt you. I swear.” And with that he walks toward me and wraps his arms around me. I begin crying again. “Shh. Shh. It’s okay. Baby girl, you’re safe. I’ve got you. I won’t let anyone hurt you.” He whispers in my ear and hugs me tighter. My arms wrap around him.
“Promise?” I sob in reply.
“Promise.” He pulls back and looks me dead in my eyes. “I promise.”
