The Not So Perfect World

Chapter 2

I was just about to sit back down at my station when a loud bell rang

"lunch time"

I said while walking to the cafeteria. There was about 300 people working in the factory at all times, day and night never stopping, of course people rotated but it's still kinda crazy to think there's so many people here at a time.

I walk into the cafeteria and walk over to the line to get food, the food wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either

"hey Molly!"

I turn to see one of my best friends Evelyn, or as I call her and only me, Eve

"Hey Eve, how are ya?

"I'm pretty fine, how are you?"

"As good as I can be"

We get to the front of the line, get our food, and walk over to our table, I sit down and start to eat when someone catches my eye

"Who are you looking at?"

My friend Maria asks me with a look of confusion on her face

"The new guy, his names Adam"

I say while I start to stand up

"I'mma go help him real quick"

My friends just smile and say ok as I walk over to Adam. Adam is standing next to the doors of the cafeteria looking confused, lost, and scared, but calms down a little when he sees me walking towards him

"You look completely lost, want some help?

I say with a calming smile which makes him smile slightly

"That would be great"

"Then follow me"

We start walking over to the lunch line and I grab a tray and hand it to him as we wait in the line

"So why are you here?"

I ask hoping to not offend him

"I was failing school, they told me if I didn't get an A on my math test they would send me here, the rehabilitation states is what they call it here"

I try to hold back a laugh but it didn't work and I bust out laughing causing myself to cry a little

"Rehabilitation states? Don't make me laugh, we people here call it the slums, there's no rehabilitation here, just work"

He looked confused again, boy he looks confused a lot

"But I thought you could take a test to try to get back? That what they told us"

I could tell he was starting to panic but that was just the hard truth of it all

"They tell you guys that you can take a test to get back which isn't a lie but it's extremely hard, there's a few years wait to take the test because only one person is authorised to give it and they only come three times a week and odd hours. In the time I've been here only five people have passed, and not everyone can take the test, like I can't"

He was just about to say something but he was interrupted by the lunch lady asking what he wants to eat. He gets his food and we walk back to my table and sit down

"Everyone this is Adam"

"Hi Adam"

Everyone says at once

"Adam, this is Maria, Evelyn, Jackson, Lexi, Marco, and James"

They all smile at him and he smiles back

"So how has your first day been so far Adam?

Eve asks while taking another bite of her chicken sandwich

"Definitely different from what I expected"

I think we all understood that more then we would like. The rest of lunch we just sat and talked about random things until we heard the bell signifying that lunch was over and it was time to go back to our stations which caused a collective groan. We all stood up and put our trays away the walked back to our stations, I walked Adam back to the pressure room then started on my way back to my station until Mat came running over to me

"The supervisor asked me to give you this and asked for you to run it over to Michel at the butcher's"

I looked up at him confused, why would I have to give that to the butcher, I thought they didn't like each other but you never know around here most people try to not make friends thinking that they'll be able to leave. I grab the piece of paper from his hand and was about to open it to read until he slapped my hand

"Ow! What was that for!?"

He rolled his eyes and sighed

"Listen Molly I'm sorry but it's supposed to be top secret, even I don't know what it says, and you know I know everything about this place!"

I laughed slightly and put the paper in my pocket

"I'll take it over right away but I better get paid extra for this!

Mat just laughed

"Thanks again for doing this Molly"

He patted me on the shoulder and I walk towards the entrance and walk out the door to the only world I ever really knew....
