Chapter 2 - I know nothing

"Hey," a voice behind me says.

I place some binders and textbooks in my locker. The person behind me waits patiently, tapping their foot.

Finally, I turn my head to meet brown eyes.

"Calum," I breathe. His eyebrows are knitted together, his muscles in his body tense.

A strangled laugh escapes his lips. "You know my name."

"I know everyone's name," I tell him truthfully.

"Ah, for a second there I thought I was special."

I shift uncomfortably, not knowing what to say or do. Calum leans back onto the locker beside mine and let's out a sigh. "What do you want?" I question finally.

"To talk," Calum states simply. I look around, seeing Michael and Ashton standing about fifty feet away from us, just watching, with their arms crossed over their chest.

I break my stare on them and look at Calum. "Continue."

He sighs and looks around, as if he were looking for someone in particular. After a few seconds he turns to me. "What do you know?"

I'm shocked at his question. What do you know? Is there anything to know? What am I missing?

"What are you talking about?" I question, genuinely confused.

"You know," he leans in, whispering, "about Luke."

Luke? What's there to know about Luke? "Nothing," I respond. "I know nothing. Is there something I need to know?"

Calum turns around, looking at Michael and Ashton. They both shake their heads. He faces me again. "No. There's nothing you need to know."

And he walks away.

There's definitely something. Maybe I don't need to know it, but I want to. I really want to.

***

I watch Luke walk out of the school. Well, it's not like I'm the only one. Every girl turns his way. He is wearing a jean jacket, which is rolled up to just below his elbows, a black skeleton t-shirt, skin tight jeans with large rips at the knees, black converse, and a loose bone necklace. Everything about him screams bad boy. But I just want to know more about him. I want to know the secrets deep within.

So I walk.

"Luke," I call after him, slinging my backpack over my shoulder. He doesn't stop to turn around like I thought he would, but instead slows down. His heels slide along the floor, making it look like he is casually strolling. Once I make it to him, I begin to walk along his side. "So," I draw out the o.

Luke walks silently beside me.

"So my friends and I were wondering if you wanted to go to see a movie with us."

Luke and I make our way outside. I see Piper and Dylan watching us from a distance. They keep giggling and staring at Luke. I try to tell them to stop staring without using words, but it's useless. They just continue squealing. And finally, Luke says, "I'm okay."

I furrow my eyebrows. He doesn't want to come? But... "Why?"

"Because going to see a movie is what friends do, and we are not friends."

"But I thought maybe-"

"We are not friends," Luke interrupts me with his terse sentence.

I open my mouth to object, but close it again. It won't help with anything.
