Ceil had driven her to school each day since the day at the library and Abbi looked forward to seeing him until her sister rained on her parade.
"Mom and Dad are coming home tonight." she stopped Abbi in the hall. "who was that boy you were talking to at lunch?" something seemed off about her sister's mood and she wondered if she could see the difference in the wolves and humans too. She quickly dismissed the thought. Maria didn't even know werewolves existed.
"just a kid in my first class, he talks to me once in a while." Abbi shrugged.
"whatever." Maria walked away so as not to risk her reputation by talking to Abbi. They may be sisters but Abbi was an outcast from day one. No one would judge Maria based on her weirdo sister. The bus driver actually let Abbi ride this afternoon and it kinda made her sad. Looking out the window she could see Ceil looking right at her from inside his car. Rolling up the window he drove away. Abbi's heart dropped. She had finally begun to cultivate a friendship with him. Abbi sighed as the bus pulled away from the school.
"Dad, when are you going hunting again?" she smiled when she saw him getting his gun ready. every time her parents came home her father took her hunting within the following week.
"Tomorrow, do you want to go with me?" he smiled at her. The bags under his eyes told all about his unrest during their time away.
"yes!" Abbi grinned from ear to ear. She was always a fan of hunting. It was what she was best at.
"remember to get up early, and no running off this time." he looked like her father again for only a moment. She nodded then headed to bed without dinner so she could get enough rest.
"Abbi, will never be one of us, she has no ability. Without proof of her hunter blood she is just another human." Robert shook his head as he climbed into bed with his wife.
"she will not be taught to be a hunter, only what she needs to use a gun. That's all we can do unless she learns about werewolves." his wife Anne, shook her head in disappointment. They had such hope for Abbi, she should have been the one with power. Anne turned off the bedside lamp and laid next to her husband in darkness until sleep took her.
The next morning after her shower Abbi retrieved her hunting clothes grabbing her ripped pants by accident. She ran her hand over the hole in the knees of her pants recalling how she had gotten it. It was silly how afraid she had been of the werewolves. Laughing silently she put back the pants and grabbed another pair.
The woods were silent at six in the morning while Abbi and her father quietly stalked the forest. Their game was usually just anything that her father could legally shoot. She had her own gun this time and a license to hunt. The heavy breathing and fast though light footsteps of several animals drifted to her ears. Her father raised his rifle pointing it in the direction of the sound. Three wolves burst into a clearing slowing their pace to a near stop as they sniffed the air, their scruffs raising. A sense of familiarity washed over Abbi as she watched them. They were all black wolves though two were lighter in color from the lead wolf. The light click of the safety on her father's gun caught their attention. Three heads swiveled in their direction.
The second she saw those eyes she felt dread in her heart. Looking up she watched her father about to squeeze the trigger and pushed his gun up causing him to barely graze the lead wolf. He yelped as the bullet sliced across his back before he and his siblings ran as fast as they could home.
"why did you do that Abbi?" her father was furious.
"you were going to shoot the neighbor's dogs." she whispered.
