One Year Later

It was a sunny day, but nothing about the day was sunny, or warm, or bright. I sat on the ground before the shrine. The goddess Hylaeia looked down at me, smiling. I ripped the black veil from my head, tearing it into shreds.

"I want to be alone." I heard soft footsteps approach from behind me. A small hand reached down beside me, gently placing something on the ground. I looked over to see a young girl. "I-I'm sorry Lily." It was Marcus' younger sister, Lily. She smiled and ran off, back towards the palace. Her long black hair bounced in time with the poofy skirt of her black dress as she ran. I picked up what she had left. A small book, made of light blue fabric. There was golden lettering on the front, but that was the only thing I saw on the outside. That was quite off since all books were usually dated and stamped with the location where it was written as well as the author's name. "The Tale of the Moon Princess..." I read the title quietly. I flipped through a few pages before putting it back down. I didn't hear anyone coming, but suddenly a pair of strong arms wrapped around me, lovingly.

"I know you want to be alone...but I cannot be..." He softly whispered, holding me tightly against him. I leaned into his embrace, realizing I needed him. He pulled me back so we laid facing each other on the grass. Looking into his eyes, I couldn't keep myself together. I let the tears flow. Artik stroked my hair gently, as he always did to calm me down.

"I can't stay here..." I couldn't become queen until I married. The court would arrange something and I would have no say. After me, Artik had the position to take the throne. "I watched my mother die for an entire year. She suffered for a year because I was selfish..." Not long after she fell ill she died, but she didn't exactly die. Her magic kept her alive but on the brink of true death. She barely had energy to speak. She insisted on giving me her magic, but that would kill her. I ignored the fact that she really wasn't living, as long as she was alive somehow, I wanted it to stay that way, so I kept refusing to take her magic. She always smiled when I visited her, though. The previous night, I realized what I was doing and finally agreed to inherit her magic. She died. Permanently. "I can feel her magic in my heart, but...it's very different from mine." Artik gently wiped my tears with his thumb. "It's almost like...my body is trying to fight it off. As if it's poisoning me. It's not bad or dark...it's pure...just not pure enough. I don't want to but...I'm going to have to get rid of it." Or else it might kill me. I lied, there was something dark in her magic. I understood why she got sick. She fought against it for too long. How did this happen? "Artik...I don't know what kind of magic I have...if it's not the same as my mother's...Artik...What am I?" I clutched the locket I kept around my neck every moment of my life.

"I don't know..."

"What do you mean? There must be someone who does...wait...would a wizard know?"

"Grand wizards studied every kind of magic, from dark magic to dead ancient magic. But the Grand Wizards have all died."

"Would they have given this information to any apprentices?"

"No. I believe everything died with them. I will take care of you. I will make sure you stay pure..." I knew what I was going to do, but I couldn't tell him. "Are you okay? I mean...physically..."

"Yes." I smiled and stood, grabbing the book as I did so.

"(y/n)..." I stopped. "Please don't leave Tesslinia. Your people need you. I need you." They won't want me if I become a dark, corrupt princess.

"Thank you, Artik."

I stood in the doorway of mother's room, able to get away from the crowds with my trusted cloak. There was a hidden room in the back of the closet. I overheard mother one day talking about a magic mirror in that room. I was hoping since I had the rest of her magic, the room would let me in. As I entered the closet, I wasn't even sure what I was looking for. I just stood still, looking at all of my mother's beautiful gowns and taking in her familiar scent. I looked through them, remembering times when she wore each one. I suddenly heard a click and a light appeared on the other side of the closet. I went to examine and saw the wall had slid back slightly. I pushed the wall, making an entrance to a small space behind the closet.

"It's real..." I slowly stepped in. It was empty, except for a large full length mirror against the far wall.

"I feel the queen's magic, but you are not the queen." The mirror began to glow. "The queen's magic is tainted...but mixed with the purest magic that can exist..." I approached it slowly as the voice of an old woman spoke.

"The queen has died. I am her daughter...that tainted magic you speak of...is there a way to cleanse it?"

"I would not know, dear. I am only a mode of transportation."

"Transportation?"

"I can open a door to wherever you like."

"Can you find people?"

"That I can, love."

"There's this supposed wizard...Kestik I believe his name was...can you find him?" There was silence for a few moments.

"He uses a spell to hide himself from magic like mine, but I have located the area he may be in."

"You can send me there?"

"I can."

"Will you please send me to him?"

"The location is within the Drennan Plains. Do you still wish to go?"

"Yes, I am aware. Please...send me to him." The glass began to ripple.

"Enter." I slowly reached out, my hand going through the glass.
