My heavy eyes fluttered open, the faint sound of Sleeping With a Friend by Neon Trees flooding my now awake brain.Dreams forced to cease their mind manifestation, forced by covers ripped away from my body. My oversized sweater draping just above my knees, I groaned the whole way as I trudged to the bathroom. I thought about the long day of school ahead as I slowly pulled the grey chunky knit over my head, discarding it on the floor. I let my bun out and removed my underclothing. I was definitely ready to just get in the shower and wash everything away.
The shower was quick, about five minutes. I wrapped a towel around my head and another on my body, proceeding to walk back to my room. I laid out a pair of high-rise black skinny jeans, a plain white tee-shirt, a sherpa jean jacket, and white vans. I dried my body off completely and adorned the plain outfit. I walked over to the mirror to examine my appearance.
Now, I'm not one of those girls who stands in the mirror and moves their skin around complaining about how fat they are, because I'm actually mad skinny. To the point where it looks bad and unhealthy to most people. But me, I'm actually pretty damn satisfied with how I look. Then I do my makeup, starting with all my face liquids and powders that I can never seem to keep track of what's what. Then my normal black winged eyeliner and mascara that makes my lashes look ten times longer than they actually are.
Just as I was setting down my tube of mascara, I jumped hearing a knock at my door. I actually startle really easily. When I didn't answer in the next millisecond, Nat barged in yelling, "Come on bitch! Let's go!"
"You're lucky asshole," I said smugly. "I just finished."
"Dammit Onyx, you take forever to get ready." she sighed, exasperated. She put a clear emphases on the word 'forever'. I shrugged and scurried in front of her out the door, making her look like the slow one. I laughed to myself, walking ahead of her on the little bridge that connected my little condo with the main house. I grabbed an orange and my school bag, yelling to my grandma as Nat and I walked out the door.
We always just walk to school together since it's like seven minutes from my house on foot. Though it wasn't a rigorous walk, my heart was beating slightly faster than normal by the time we got to school. I'm really out of shape because I don't really eat much nor do I work out. Nat on that other hand had a fabulous body on account of her years playing soccer. Even though she was best friends with me, a lot of guys had crushes on this Latin beauty.
Despite the fact she could literally get any guy in the school, she had a raging infatuation with Shaun Harley, a quite boy who sits in the corner and does what he's told. No one knows much about him, he's kind of mysterious in a way. Nat loves adventure so that's probably why she's practically in love with the kid.
The smell of perfume and body odor filled my nostrils and we engulfed ourselves in the horror that is high school. Cliques everywhere, stuck up teachers, the gum under the seats desperately struggling to hold together the pieces of a broken educational environment.
"I'm just going to go up the green stairs, okay?" Nat confirmed. I nodded and started quietly making my way to choir, the first verse to Misery by The Maine freshly echoing in my distant mind. I actually like choir because I love singing, it's one of the only things I haven't lost interest in.
The day went on slowly after that, I was relieved when I finally reached lunch. I have the latest lunch hour you can possibly have but at least all my friends are in it. I unlocked my locker and grabbed my lunch bag as Dakota ran up and clobbered me against the other lockers. "Kota!" I screeched, trying not to laugh. I crossed my arms pretending to be mad.
"Got you!" Kota said between breaths, not being able to talk. Between him being out of air from running and tackling me and his elated fits of laughter, it wasn't easy to make sound using his tired lungs.
"Come on, let's go to lunch you booger." I said, nudging him playfully. We strolled down to hall to lunch, pretending to run into each other the whole way. Once we safely arrived at the cafeteria, we spotted Nat sitting at our usual table. Kota was getting hot lunch so he immigrated to the lunch line and I walked over to Nat. She looked distraught so I asked, "What's wrong?"
"Fucking Caden." She replied. Smoke seemed to be seeping out of her ears.
"What?" I hunted. "Where is he?" She pointed furiously towards the table where the cheerleaders and jocks sit. Our school is very cliche, we have our preps, the cheerleaders and jocks obviously, the nerds, the goths, the "weirdos", the LGBT community, and our group is just kind of in the mix of it all. Well it was. Because sure enough there was Caden, surrounded by girls fawning over him and all the guys talking about how cool he is. Don't get me wrong, I love Caden. He's one of the coolest guys I know, I don't want him to get wrapped up in the idea of popularity. I never thought he would either but I guess I was wrong. All three of them could become popular easily, but they chose to stick by me. Nat and Kota I mean, I'm not so sure about Caden anymore.
Instead of showing how sad I actually was that Caden left us, I just scoffed and said, "I can't believe him. But whatever, who needs him anyway if he's going to act that way." Nat nodded.
"What's the deal with Mr. Popular over there?" Kota asked as he approached, referring to Caden.
"He's decided he's too good for us now." Nat revealed bitterly.
"What a bastard." Kota mumbled. We ate the rest of lunch in silence. In fact, none of us talked much the rest of the day. Not even in math class did Nat flirt with Shaun as she usually did, she just quietly sat copying down the notes and examining the lesson. At the end of the day, all four of us used to walk to my house to hang out and sometimes even study together. Today there were only three, or so we thought.
"Hey guys, wait up!" Caden yelled running after us. All of us just stared at him, in awe of how oblivious he was to our feelings. "Why didn't you guys wait for me?" he inquired, looking at all of us.
"Oh, so now that no one's around we're good enough again? Sorry bud, you're ship has sailed." Nat sassed.
"Natalia, what are you talking about? We're best friends aren't we?" He practically begged.
"Yeah dude, we thought so. But now you're parading around with the pom pom hoes. C'mon man." Kota shook his head, all of us turning into the direction of my house walking away. Every one of us could hear him shouting our names, every one of us ignored him. It was like a mutual understanding, we didn't need to say it. I guess it was just the three of us from now on.
