Flashback

Will you come to the festival tonight?” I heard Austin ask me as he ran to my locker. I turned around so I could see him, and he was closer than I thought. I awkwardly took a step back, bumping into the locker behind me.

Of course I'll be there to support you”, I smiled, blushing because of my clumsiness. I shouldn't be feeling like this around him. I should be able to be myself. After all, he was my boyfriend.

Good”, he smiled as he leaned into me and kissed me quickly. He then waved a goodbye and jogged back to his group of friends walking past us.

It was the summer of 2011 and there was held a big music festival in Sydney. It took place here every year, and it was almost the same performances year after year. It may sound boring, but it actually wasn't. We had some incredibly talented people here. One of those people was my boyfriend, Austin. He played in a band with some of his friends, their band name was Outsiders' Town and they were surprisingly good.

Austin was the lead singer and also guitarist of the band, and he wrote most of their songs as well. Sometimes he would go all romantic and dedicate a song to me, but I would always blush when people looked my way.

But the main reason Austin and his band mates participated in the festival was because of the prize. It was rough competition, but every year, one special band who got the most votes, got signed for a label. That was what Austin had dreamt about for like, his whole life.

I saw the signs right before I heard the music.

'Sydney Enjoy Festival 2011' all of them read. I got out of the bus and ran towards my friends. I hugged both Hanna and Samantha and got handed a flyer. I read through it. I remembered almost every name on there from last year, but one was new. '5 Seconds Of Summer'. I've never heard of them before. I made a mental note to myself to keep my ears and eyes open for this band.

I have to go find Austin, he forgot his keys back home”, Samantha said and ran off, not waiting for us to answer. Samantha is Austin's sister, so it felt natural that we evantually became close friends.

So, should we go get something to drink?” Hanna asked me and I nodded. This was a party and no one really cared about underage drinking here anyway. We began walking towards the center of the festival, and soon we were standing with one cup each in front of the stage.

Everything was so colorful and loud here, everyone seemed to be so happy and carefree. I wished it could be like this every day.

The first band up was a girl band called Girls Of The Coral. They started playing and I got kind of bored. They were like any other girl band and played pop music. Not really my style. I began searching the crowd for Samantha.

I spotted her brown hair and cute smile from afar and I waved at her to come over to us, but she was busy talking to someone else. I may have looked a little stupid trying to catch her attention when she didn't even glance my way. She was talking to an asian boy, clearly flirting. My eyes wandered back to the stage and even though I didn't like the music, me and Hanna danced and had really fun throughout the girl band's performance.

Are you having a good time?” the host shouted as he walked up on the stage. He was a dark skinned, young man with a raspy voice and funny hair. Me, Hanna and the rest of the crowd screamed back at the man as an answer. How stupid isn't that, if you think about it.

Now give it up for Outsiders' Town!”

A lot of girls started screaming like crazy, but I wasn't one of them. I already had Austin, I wasn't one of those fangirls. I just whistled and applauded.

Austin walked in with a small, flirty smile on his lips and his hands in the air. His guitar hung in its strap over his shoulder. The crowd roared even more. Following close after him came his band mates, just as confident. Austin grabbed the microphone and they started playing their first song right away. Sometimes I could catch his eye and he smiled at me, but mostly his eyes traveled over the rest of the crowd.

After Outsiders' Town's performance, the host returned to the stage and told a pair of really bad jokes. When he finally realized that half of the crowd was too drunk to even understand the punch line, and that the rest of it thought that it was really bad, he returned to calling up bands to the stage.

A round of applause for... oh, this one is new. 5 Seconds Of Summer?”
