Chapter 22
You know how when you're in a car with the window down and there's so much air coming at you that you can't breathe?
Well, that's how I feel at this very moment. Lee is gone, and so much hurt is coming at me. I just can't breathe. I can't cry. I can't move.
I'm just sitting next to his cold, still body. His blood staining my hands, my shirt, my pants, and the floor. There's a puddle of his blood still forming around me. My hand is still tightly wrapped around his, and I don't wanna let go. Because if I let go then it's true; he's dead. But if I keep holding on then I can pretend he's still here with us.
" Astrid." Ashton says, his voice sounding broken, exhausted. I don't answer him. I just sit there, clutching Lee's hand for dear life. But it's his dear life that we've already lost.
" Sweetheart, come on. We have to go." He says and this time I look up at him through my clouded vision. As soon as I see the hurt on his face a sob forces it's way out. I try to control it but the tears keep coming. I lean down and place a kiss on his cheek. Just before I get up I place my hand on his chest, hoping and praying to feel the beat of his steady heart but his chest is still. And it forever will be.
I stand up and my knees are weak. Ashton looks at me. " Come here." He says and wraps both arms around me as tightly as he can. It hurts a little, but i don't mind. I wrap my arms around him and grab the fabric of his shirt and squeeze it. His shoulders shake as he holds me. He cries into my shoulder just as I cry into his.
" We have to go." He whispers, but doesn't pull away.
I nod, and hold onto him a little longer.
After we release each other I ask him a question.
" What do we do now. They've found us again. They're gonna keep finding us." I say.
Ashton runs his finger through his hair, and moves close to me. " I have an idea, but they might be listening." He signals for me to follow him. We walk into the bathroom, and sit in the bath tub. Wierd, I know. But it's the last place that they would expect us to have a conversation.
" Okay, we can do one of two things. " I nod, and wait for him to continue. " We can pack up and run again." He says, and I sigh heavily. He continues. " Or, we can end it. End him."
"You mean, kill Damien?" I ask.
" Yes." He says with confidence.
" And how will we do that?" I ask.
" I have a plan. " Ashton says.
He goes on to explain the plan. We will wait here. They are expecting us to run like we have been. And when they attack we'll be ready. By killing Lee they're telling us that this isn't a game anymore, and it never really was.
We spend that night getting ready. Ashton and I went to the hardware store around the corner and got all the supplies.
I know it seems morbid, but we didn't move Lee's body. I can't stand to even look at him let alone touch him.
Its hard to believe that all of this has happened to me. To Ashton. To us.
But somehow we've survived.
