When Surge woke up, he found Grace already changing his wrappings. "Your up early," he told her.

"Well, gotta make sure everything is good with you," she responds.

Surge smiled up at her, enjoying her company. He could not really understand it, but he felt completely happy with Grace around. A sense of dread washed over him though when he remembered that she would have to leave when he was healed.

Grace saw that something was bothering Surge. "What's wrong?" She asked, while she was changing the last bandage.

Not really wanting to admit what he thought he was feeling, Surge just simply told her, "its nothing important."

What Surge did not know, was that Grace as feeling the same thing. She did not really want to leave when he was better. Grace had grown rather fond of her patient.

To lighten the current awkward tension, Surge asked her, "so tell me about your family." He regretted asking as soon as he saw the look on her face.

Grace sat down next to him, with her head down, and complete distraught written across her face.

"You don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to," he quickly said.

Grace replied, "no, it would only be fair. Especially after you freely telling me about your mother yesterday." Taking a deep breath, she started, "my father died when I was five. Lost his life in the war between us mers and you sharks. Five years later, when I was ten, my mother caught a deadly disease, and I lost her too. never had any brothers or sisters. No friends. Other mermen, and mermaids, only give me looks of pity. In all reality, your the closest thing I ever had to a friend."

Surge felt bad for even asking now, but his heart swelled with pride when she said the last part. He thought to himself for a moment, before saying, "I could probably talk my father into letting you stay here. I would like to think of myself as your friend, if you want. Then you could have someone at least you could talk to."

Grace smiled down at him.  'I think I would like that."

Surge felt another swell in his heart. Though he just knew, she could never love a shark, he could at least have a friend in her.

Grace was feeling more at ease now. Though she knew in her heart, he could never love a mermaid, at least she could have a friend in him.

They spent the rest of the day talking about anything, and everything, that does not include their feelings for each other.
