Abby's pov

I groaned as the piercing sound of my alarm woke me from my short slumber. I haven't been sleeping well lately. Well, what I mean by lately is the last few years.

My family situation hasnt been the most stable for a while and im up until all hours, making sure that i would be safe throughout the night. The fighting, the breaking of glasses, the yelling, the alcohol. Most people would dream of being an only child, but if their parents were like mine, they would understand that its anything but a dream.

i rubbed my tired eyes and sat down at my vanity applying my normal, everyday makeup while singing softly to myself

" A drop in the ocean, a change in the weather i was praying that you and me would end up together its like wishing for rain as i, stand in the desert......"

my voice was nowhere near amazing, but it was just soothing to have a little bit of time before having to face the world for school and then work later today. I was lucky to have one best friend to get me through these hard times that i call my everyday life.

i smiled to myself about Caroline as i stood up to get dressed. I put on a pair of ripped light wash jeans, a Texas A&M sweatshirt and a pair of black vans. i was gathering my school stuff and putting together a bag full of my work clothes when i heard my phone bing with a text message

Bestie Caroline 🤩:

get your ass outside, we have to get to hell

i mean school

i giggled to myself and quietly slipped out my house making sure not to stir my sleeping parents. i ran and jumped into the passenger seat of her car

"good morning sunshine!"

"shh im sleepy"

"I can tell Caroline" i giggled gently as she looked like she was still half asleep.

"how was last night? the usual?"

"They fought, again but at least this time my mom didn't target me." she nodded, dropping the subject before looking over at my outfit and giggled a little bit and said

"you know you're gonna have stop wearing your American university hoodies, this is Australia, you have been here for a year now."

"but, gig em Aggies!" i pouted at her. she giggled again and shook her head at me as we pulled into the school parking lot.

Luckily enough our lockers were right next to each other because of how our last names fell in the alphabet but what wasn't lucky was the fact that we had no classes together throughout the day. Our ride over, at our lockers and then her dropping me of at work after school were the only times i really saw her. it hurt not having her with me all day but we would constantly text through the day which made everything better.

we separated on our way to first period and as i got to my World History class and sat down in my desk Mr. Charles spoke and said

"Miss Abby, could you run this to the front office for me?" i nodded and grabbed the envelope from his hand, not even questioning what it was. I made my way through the doors of the office and handed the paper to the secretary and took a lollipop that was sitting in a cup on her desk on my way out.  as i walked back to class i heard a familiar voice call my name.

"Hey Abby! Wait up!" i turned around to see Calum, him and i weren't exactly friends but we were certainly friendly with each other whenever we saw one another. He had been the one to show me around when i arrived here a year ago. It was pretty intimidating walking in for your first day of school in a new country with a 6'2 boy practically tattooed from head to toe showing you around. i snapped out of my thoughts and smiled at him.

"hey Calum, how are you?"

"Im great! i wanted to introduce you to one of my friends who just transferred, im giving him the grand tour. Hey this is Abby, the girl i was telling you about."

i turned to look at his friend, and i was met with the most gorgeous piercing blue eyes. They took my breath away for a second. The boy was a few inches taller than Calum, somehow had more tattoos and quiffed blonde hair.

He smiled confidently at me and extended his hand.

"Hi, I'm Luke Hemmings"
